Adams, the Klickitat area boasts some of the best vineyards and wineries in Washington State. Now is your chance to discover this backroad adventure where you may enjoy spectacular beauty and wines. 15 DALLES MOUNTAIN ROAD off Highway 14 offers abundant wildflowers in spring and spectacular views of mountains and the Columbia Gorge. Gravel road leads to Centerville. 16 WISHRAM Railtown and site of historic Native American village. A 1923 Baldwin steam locomotive sits in Wishram’s Railroad Park. 17 MARYHILL MUSEUM OF ART and its lovely grounds occupy a rugged bluff above the river. Excellent permanent collections and special exhibitions. Open 9 to 5 daily from March 15 to November 15. 18 MARYHILL Townsite and Park form a wide green oasis at the river’s edge. Tiny historic church is noteworthy. Fruit in season is sold by local orchardists. STONEHENGE replica on a nearby bluff is a WWI memorial built by Sam Hill. 19 LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION camped near CROW BUTTE STATE PARK in late October of 1805 on their journey westward to the Pacific. 20 The MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD finds help from hundreds of much-needed nesting houses created on this high plateau by area residents. 21 A turn-of-the-century CAROUSEL, restored and maintained by Bickleton residents, is a cherished fixture of the annual Cleveland Pioneer Picnic and Rodeo. The carousel horses are displayed at the BICKLETON CAROUSEL MUSEUM the rest of the year. 22 The 1902 PRESBY MUSEUM houses the Klickitat County Historical Museum. 23 GOLDENDALE OBSERVATORY STATE PARK offers tours, programs and use of its 24½ inch reflecting telescope to the general public and to students of astronomy. 24 An architectural gem: Goldendale’s historic CARNEGIE LIBRARY and its harmonious contemporary wings which echo its scale and detail. 25 GOLDENDALE, golden wheat fields and snowcapped moun- tains frame this sunny pioneer settlement. 21 homes are listed on the Historic homes of Goldendale. It also serves as the county seat for Klickitat County. 26 ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER in Brooks Memorial State Park has cabins and a dining room which can accommodate study-groups of up to 104. Reservations must be made well in advance. 27 SATUS PASS provides access to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling areas. 28 SALMON HATCHERY, a choice scenic area. 29 GLENWOOD is a gateway to the Upper Klickitat Canyon and vast Mt. Adams recreational areas. Lodging, food, information, and guide services available year-round. 30 CONBOY LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE provides sand cranes, swans, ducks and geese an oasis for nesting, feeding and resting during spring and fall migrations. A two-mile loop trail allows wildlife viewing. 14 DOUG’S BEACH STATE PARK is dedicated exclusively to windsurfing. Excellent high winds and 6 to 8 ft. swells are common in this area. At its most challenging, considered for experts only. 1 TRAILS offer experiences for all fitness levels. Please leave only your footprints behind, and help us to maintain the beauty of this area. HELENS VIEWPOINT (bring binoculars!) 4 INDIAN HEAVEN WILDERNESS Great hiking and huckleberry picking area. Permits are available fromPark Services. 5 Large, dramatic ICE CAVES, formed by molten lava. Wooden steps aid access; exploration is self-guided. 6 Of major geologic interest is BIG LAVA BED. 12,500 acres of sculptural shapes, caves and crevasses. Usually viewed from its edge. Use caution if you trek in. There are no creeks, landmarks or trails to follow. 7 WHITE WATER RAFTING on the White Salmon River offers rafting and kayaking adventures for several levels of skill. Information, guides and equipment available locally. 8 BROUGHTON LUMBER CO. FLUME Parts of this abandoned historic structure are visible from both sides of the river. 9 WHITE SALMON/BINGEN area offers excellent accommodations, food, shops and services. Gorge Heritage Museum in Bingen displays items from pioneer days and Native American artifacts and crafts. 10 JOSLYN HOUSE in Bingen was the second home of the area’s first white settlers. It is privately owned. 11 CATHERINE CREEK UNIVERSAL ACCESS TRAIL on Old Highway 8 features wildflowers and outstanding views of the Gorge. 12 BALFOUR-KLICKITAT DAY-USE SITE with paved hiking trails provides unique views of the Klickitat and Columbia Rivers and opportunities for bird-watching. 13 FISHER HILL BRIDGE spans a dramatic, turbulent portion of the Klicki- tat River.
