Maintenance/Vegetation Management Technician Public Works Department Page 1 of 2 KLICKITAT COUNTY, WASHINGTON POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Maintenance/Vegetation Management Technician EFFECTIVE DATE: March 1, 2018 (Revised by Union 2018) REPORTS TO: Foreman or Supervisor PAY GRADE: Set by Union Agreement (U Code 30) DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Public Works/Road FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt LOCATION: Glenwood or White Salmon POSITION STATUS: Full-time BASIC JOB PURPOSE/FUNCTION: Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled routine and manual road maintenance and construction work and other related work as required. Operates a variety of hand and power tools and various vehicles and equipment to accomplish work. Conducts vegetation management throughout the county. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Operates a variety of equipment and tools, such as graders, backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, rollers, snow plows, tractor mowers and the like. 2. Makes repairs to roadways, roadway shoulders and related structures, such as bridges and guardrails. 3. Uses hot and cold asphalt mix to repair chuckholes and roadways. 4. Picks up rubbish, debris and dead animals; cleans ditches and culverts by using hand tools; cleans bridges; performs general clean-up work. 5. Cuts brush, trees and other vegetation using heavy equipment, chain saw, machete, ax, brush hook and other hand tools; burns brush and weeds. Performs a variety of vegetation management throughout the county using both mechanical and chemical applications. 6. Acts as traffic flagger; places traffic cones, signs, barricades and other traffic control devices to insure a smooth flow of traffic; may drive pilot car. 7. Conducts ones self in a courteous manner with the public and other employees. ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Assists other maintenance workers in performing more complex projects and duties as assigned. 2. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures. Techniques, methods and practices of road maintenance. The proper and safe use of a variety of equipment. Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Operate and use a variety of motorized equipment and vehicles used in the performance of duties. Work independently or cooperatively in work crews. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Physically perform the essential functions of the job.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the ---PAGE BREAK--- Maintenance/Vegetation Management Technician Public Works Department Page 2 of 2 required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: High school diploma or G.E.D., and experience operating motorized equipment, preferably in road maintenance or related field. Licenses, Certificates, and Other Requirements Valid Washington State Commercial driver's license Class A combination with tank vehicle endorsement and no air brake restriction. Valid Washington State approved Flagger's Card. WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Physical hazards may be present from materials, chemicals, mechanical equipment and traffic. Physical effort is required to perform heavy manual labor. Lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required. Subject to 24-hour call-back for emergency repairs.
