Deputy Prosecuting Attorney II Prosecuting Attorney’s Office Page 1 of 2 KLICKITAT COUNTY, WASHINGTON POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Deputy Prosecuting Attorney II EFFECTIVE DATE: January 2010 REPORTS TO: Prosecuting Attorney PAY GRADE: 74 DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Prosecuting Attorney’s Office FLSA STATUS: Exempt LOCATION: Goldendale POSITION STATUS: Full-time BASIC JOB PURPOSE/FUNCTION: Provides wide range of professional legal services for the County, primarily in the areas of handling Superior Court cases (adult felonies) or in the civil area, including legal opinions, analysis of legal issues, perform legal research, prosecution of criminal cases, pursue civil and administrative remedies on behalf of the County. Prepares legal documentation and other services as required by the Prosecuting Attorney. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Prepares issues, evidence, research, and arguments for Superior court hearings and trials in both criminal and civil matters. Conducts plea negotiations. Determines strategy, organization, timing and order of evidence presentation, appearance of witnesses, jury instructions, and related matters, as well as arbitrations and claims. 2. Provides legal assistance, advice and representation to Prosecuting Attorney and other County departments and elected officials as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney in civil, administrative and criminal cases. 3. Represents the Department of Corrections in revocation proceedings or other legal hearings for violations of felony supervision or placement. Reviews notice of violation reports. Prepares documents as needed to request arrest warrants. Issues subpoenas for and presents the State’s case at hearings. Drafts orders for Superior Court for disposition of violators. 4. Provides on-call search and arrest advice to law enforcement. As assigned by Prosecuting Attorney, teaches evening and weekend classes on legal/evidentiary issues to potential law enforcement reserves. 5. Performs similar duties in other courts as assigned. If assigned to Juvenile Court, acts as principal liaison between Prosecuting Attorney and Juvenile Administrator. Provides assistance to other attorneys as needed. 6. Performs Deputy Coroner duties as assigned, and provides 24-hour on-call coroner services on a rotational basis. Gathers decedent information; contacts decedent's medical provider; arranges autopsies; coordinates with family, funeral home and pathologist as needed; completes death certificate. 7. Provide legal assistance to prevent and minimize legal exposure to the County departments, elected officials and law enforcement related matters. Provide information to County’s underwriters on claims made against the County. 8. Perform legal research and prepare written and oral opinions on various legal problems or issues. 9. Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve difficult and sensitive complaints; provide information and education to County departments, elected officials and/or the citizens on legal issues and topics of interest. 10. Prepares and handles civil forfeitures in connection with criminal matter. ---PAGE BREAK--- Deputy Prosecuting Attorney II Prosecuting Attorney’s Office Page 2 of 2 11. Review and process requests for County records, drafts of contracts and resolutions, requests for payment, and draft county codes. 12. Represent interests of State in certain child support and paternity cases. 13. Represents interests of County in state and federal administrative hearings and claims. 14. Fill in for other prosecutors. ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: 1. May participate in community outreach and educational programs. 2. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques and related tools/equipment to accomplish the basic function of this position, including any safety and/or legal requirements. This may, but not necessarily, include specialized skills. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be Juris Doctor or equivalent degree. One to three years experience in civil area, with preference for municipal and/or government field, or criminal area with some related civil experience. Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements Valid state driver's license in state of residence Member in good standing of the State Bar of Washington Blood borne pathogen training.
