STRONG WOMEN STAY YOUNG PROGRAM The Strong Women Program is a national evidence-based community exercise and nutrition program targeted to midlife and older women. Dr. Miriam E. Nelson and colleagues have de- veloped and evaluated two curricula. The first is a strength training curriculum to help women maintain muscle mass, strength, and function as they age. The second is heart disease preven- tion curriculum that focuses on aerobic activity and nutrition. Strong Women envisions a diverse community of women who are fit, strong, and healthy; in turn these empowered women become agents of change for their families, communities, and beyond. We will be continuing the Strong Women Stay Young Program at Senior Services in White Salmon. Due to inclement weather, we were unable to have the presentation as scheduled in January. The new GriefShare© Seminar started on Saturday January 28, 2017. It is designed for anyone who is dealing with the loss of a loved one and finds they are trying to navigate the grief process without the tools to get them through this difficult life experience. If you missed the first sessions, that is okay, it is designed to be a drop-in seminar meaning you can attend at any time dur- ing the 13-week course. It is very professionally presented by licensed professional counselors. It is video-based and offers help from the counselors and interviews with peo- ple who have gone through the grief process. The hosts, Dave and Nancy Guthrie lost a child before birth, another counselor lost his wife, two others lost children, and others their husband or parent or sibling. GriefShare was developed by an organization called Church Initiative and is designed to help a person learn how to deal with his emotions, fears and frustrations that are occurring as a result of their profound loss. Helpful, practical information is provided, such as why a person’s grief ex- perience is harder than they imagined it would be. How the death of a loved one can affect friendships also is discussed. Participants learn how to deal with false guilt, handle conflicted relationships, cope with grief-related anger, why a person’s grief is so overwhelming, and how their thinking affects their emotions is also addressed. One woman who attended said “Why in the world would I want to join a grief seminar? Grief is a very personal process and I am a very private per- son. However at the urging from friends and family I signed up. It is the best decision that I made after the loss of my loved one. Not every lesson ap- plied to my situation, but I was able to take at least one helpful idea from each week.” The video seminar is combined with group discussion of the materials presented during the video. It is a group that meets weekly, in an environ- ment where one can identify with others who have had a similar experience and can be around people who understand the pain of your loss. There is no charge for the program and those who attend will receive a workbook filled with practical tips, encouraging words, journaling ideas and exercises for daily help. Pick up an orange and yellow brochure at the Goldendale Senior Center to find out which topics are covered each week. Sessions are held at the Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, the church at the north end of town at 815 Columbus Avenue, on Saturday mornings at 10:30, from January 28, 2017 through April 22, 2017. Registration is not necessary but questions can be answered by calling [PHONE REDACTED]. ---PAGE BREAK--- Help For Seniors with Bladder Control Problems Incontinence is very common in older adults. According to the CDC, more than half of women and 30 percent of men ages 65 and older are affected by it. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of treatment options that can help, as well as a number of absorbent pads or underwear you could use for leakage protec- tion. Here’s what you should know. See A Doctor If you leak unexpectedly (also known as stress incontinence) or sometimes have such a strong urge to urinate (urge incontinence) that you fear you won’t make it to a bathroom in time, your first step is to make an appoint- ment with your primary care doctor, or see a gynecologist, urologist, or urogynecologist. A doctor can determine if a medication side effect or a condition like diabe- tes or a urinary-tract infection might be causing urine leakage. They can al- so set you up with a treatment plan. Depending on the reason or the type on incontinence you have, here are some common treatment options. Non-drug therapies: There are a number of exercises, bladder training techniques and lifestyle strategies that should be the first line of treatment. Kegel exercises (repeatedly tightening and relaxing the muscles that stop urine flow to strengthen them) are especially helpful for women with stress incontinence, or leaking when they laugh, cough, sneeze, lift heavy objects, or exercise. Bladder training involves keeping a diary of urination and accidents, then slowly increasing the time between bathroom visits. It’s most effective for those with urge incontinence. There are also a number of lifestyle strategies that can help, such as cut- ting down on caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, which cause the kidneys to produce more urine. Getting sufficient fiber in your diet to keep yourself regular, because constipation can contribute to incontinence. Losing weight if appropriate, because excess weight puts pressure on the abdomen and bladder, and being overweight can also lead to Type 2 diabetes, which caus- es damage to the nerves that control the bladder. And if you smoke quit, because smoking leads to excess coughing which can cause urine leakage. ---PAGE BREAK--- Help For Seniors with Bladder Control Problems (continued) Medications: Several drugs are approved for urge incontinence (or overac- tive bladder), such as prescription mirabegron (Myrbetriq), oxybutynin (Ditropan XL and generic), solifenacin (Vesicare), and tolterodine (Detrol and generic). While drug treatments are effective for many people, you also need to know that more than half of those who take incontinence drugs stop within six months because of side effects including constipation, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurry vision, and dizziness. Injections of Botox into the bladder muscle are also approved for this con- dition and may reduce the urge to urinate. This is usually prescribed to people only if other first line medications haven’t been successful. Medications should only be considered for those who continue to have bothersome despite having tried lifestyle changes and therapy exercises. Electrical stimulation: Mild electric shocks to nerves in the lower back or the pelvic area can stimulate and strengthen muscles that are involved in urination. This can help with both urge and stress incontinence, but it re- quires multiple treatments over many weeks. Surgery: Several surgical procedures are available for stress incontinence. The most common is sling surgery, where strips of mesh are im- planted to support the urethra. This surgery is very effective in most pa- tients, but should be a last resort. Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® Friday, February 3, 2017, encourage others to do the same and make the time to Know Your Numbers. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. Wear red.
