Mechanic Public Works Department Page 1 of 2 KLICKITAT COUNTY, WASHINGTON POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Mechanic EFFECTIVE DATE: January 1, 2010 (Revised by Union 2003) REPORTS TO: Equipment Supervisor PAY GRADE: Set by Agreement with Union (U Code 80) DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Public Works/Road FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt LOCATION: Goldendale POSITION STATUS: Full-time BASIC JOB PURPOSE/FUNCTION: Inspects, diagnoses and makes major and minor mechanical repairs to all types of county vehicles and equipment used in road maintenance, including field repairs. Performs general mechanical work, such as performing brake and hydraulic repairs, routine servicing, preventive maintenance inspections and corrects deficiencies. Positions assigned to the Mechanic class are distinguished from the Master Mechanic class by the performance of less difficult assignments and by lack of lead worker responsibilities. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Inspects, diagnoses and makes repairs to gas and diesel engines and such mechanical equipment as passenger vehicles, power shovels, graders, dozers, heavy trucks and accessories, loaders, rollers, and all other equipment used in highway maintenance and construction. 2. Checks bearings, wrist pins and cylinders for wear; checks pistons for wear or breakage. 3. Checks ignition systems, performs tune-ups, makes specific adjustments and repairs electronic ignition systems. 4. Replaces injectors and fuel pump and reassembles to specifications. 5. Services vehicles and equipment; changes oil and filters and performs necessary preventive and scheduled maintenance and safety inspections. 6. Checks and repairs transmission, including torque convertors and automatic transmissions. 7. Pulls wheels and replaces or repacks wheel bearings and refaces or replaces drums; replaces brake lining and shoes; repairs air cans and checks systems for leaks; repairs air compressors, air governors and Jake brakes; repairs and replaces tires. 8. Operates such shop equipment as grinders, voltage tester, drill press, wheel pullers, jacks, air tools and various hand tools and other equipment used in automotive and mechanical repairs; uses engine analyzer. 9. Inspects, repairs, modifies and installs electrical, air and hydraulic systems and other special accessories to the equipment on hand. 10. Installs spreader boxes, sanders and snow plows. 11. Fabricates parts and equipment as necessary. 12. Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment. 13. Performs specialized servicing and repair work such as welding, body repair and painting. ---PAGE BREAK--- Mechanic Public Works Department Page 2 of 2 14. Road tests vehicles after repair. ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques of vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. Gas and diesel engines, automobile electronics, transmissions, electrical, air and hydraulic systems and related mechanical systems. Hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade. Standards related to vehicle safety and pollution control. Ability to operate equipment and tools used in testing and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment. Accurately diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment. Prioritize and organize work assignments, performing work with a minimum of supervision. Follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Physically perform the essential functions of the job. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: High school diploma or G.E.D., specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair and three years experience in vehicle and/or equipment mechanical repair. Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements Valid Washington State Commercial driver's license Class A combination with tank vehicle endorsement and no air brake restriction. Flagging Card First Aid Card is desirable. Provides own set of hand tools for the repair and maintenance of light duty and heavy equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in a shop environment but there may be exposure to varying weather conditions when working outside. May be exposed to chemical fumes, traffic hazards and a variety of shop equipment. Lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required. Subject to call- back for emergency repairs.
