In the coming weeks, the current locomotive will be swapped with Great Northern locomotive #1809 at no cost to the City. KALISPELL, MONT. — The idea of the Kalispell Core Area Plan dates as far back as the 80’s said Jarod Nygren, the Development Services Director. In 2012 the revitalization project was oÞcially proposed. Kalispell to get historical locomotive for Core Area Plan by Maria Diss Friday, September 18th 2020 AA 40 ° 75 ° 77 ° Search Site ---PAGE BREAK--- 9/21/2020 Kalispell to get historical locomotive for Core Area Plan I KECI 2/4 The purpose of the project is to improve the layout, safety, and economic vitality of the core area by improving roadway traÞc, adding alternative (non-motorized) modes of transportation for residents and visitors and the revitalization of Kalispell’s historic downtown area to attract additional businesses, retail, and residential uses. Part of the project involves removing 1.6 miles of railroad bed through the Kalispell Core Area from Meridian Road to the bridge over Highway 2 East and turning it into a pedestrian trail that will connect to the existing Great Northern Historical Trail. The Õnal design for the trail will be presented this fall and construction is expected to begin next year. Along the railroad stands a locomotive. In the coming weeks, the current locomotive will be swapped with Great Northern locomotive #1809 at no cost to the City. The swap of the two locomotives is taking place because locomotive #1809 is a historically correct locomotive that was owned by the Great Northern Railroad and operated along the rail-line starting in the 1950’s. The Great Northern Locomotive #1809 is currently being restored in Spokane, said Nygren. “The locomotive we have is not truly historical to the Great Northern Rail Line and part of this project is also to try and preserve some of the history,” said Nygren. The locomotive sits at the corner of E.
