Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing harmful bacteria and nutrients to wash into the storm drain systems. Lawn and Garden Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. Select native plants and grasses that are drought and pest resistant. Don’t over water your lawn. Vegetate bare spots and cover piles of dirt and mulch to prevent soil erosion. Vehicle and Garage Use a commercial car wash or wash the car on a lawn. Clean up spilled fluids with absorbent material like kitty litter or sand, and don’t rinse the spills into a storm drain. Recycle used oil and other automotive fluids. Tip: Dispose of Products Properly Properly dispose of household hazardous waste, because if it is simply landfilled, it can end up vaporizing or leaking into our ground water. These wastes should be recycled or taken to a household hazardous waste drop-off site or event for proper disposal.
