Kalispell – The Kalispell Fire Department and the Buckle Up Montana Coalition will be hosting a free car seat safety check-up event June 16th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Trained technicians will be checking children’s car seats for correct type and usage. This service will be offered at Kalispell Fire Station 62, 255 Old Reserve Loop, near Costco. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury and death for Montana children age 1 to 14. Parents, grandparents and caregivers of young children can take advantage of this opportunity to find out whether they are using the right car seat for their child and how to install it correctly. Correct car seat installation can be complicated, but local trained technicians can help you understand the latest recommendations for the highest degree of safety for the child you are transporting. Reasons to have car seats inspected: • To be sure that the proper type and size of seat is being used for each child and each vehicle • To make certain the child seat is properly anchored to the vehicle and it fits the child • To be sure the child is properly positioned in the seat • To ensure the car seat hasn’t been recalled. A limited number of free booster seats will be given away during this event. Who should use a booster seat? • A child who has outgrown a standard safety seat (over 40 pounds and under 4’ 9” tall) • A child between about 40 and 80 pounds • A child who cannot bend their knees over the edge of the vehicle seat with their back in contact with the back cushion.
