GAS STATIONS What’s the problem? Pollutants from gas stations (including gasoline, oil, grease, automo- tive fluids, and trash) can flow into storm drains due to rain or snow melt and spills. Local ordinance prohibits these pollutants from en- tering the storm system. You can prevent polluted water from leaving the site and entering storm drains. Water that enters storm drains is not treated or cleaned before entering our rivers. Public Works Department For more information go to: kalispell.com/465/Stormwater 1 3 4 2 Spill Clean Up Create and maintain a Spill Re- sponse Plan Have clean up materials ready Spot-clean leaks and drips daily Use minimal water when cleaning up leaks or spills Keep spills from entering the street and storm drains Trash Storage Areas Keep garbage areas clean and lids closed Prevent disposal of liquid waste in dumpsters Use dry methods to clean dump- sters and storage areas If a leak occurs, call the servicer immediately General Operations Contain wash water. Do not dispose of in the gutter or street Inspect for and clean leaks and drips routinely Label all drains to indicate whether flow is to the storm system, sewer, or oil/water separator Maintain good housekeeping practices on the site Fuel Dispensing Areas Use dry clean up methods to maintain fuel dis- pensing areas Temporarily plug storm drains if washing the area. Contain, pump out, and properly dispose of collected water Use vapor recovery nozzles to help control drips and air pollution Ensure tank truck personnel are present at all times when transferring fuel and that the delivery truck is equipped with a cam-lock system Photo by Steve Muller
