Install lights that are motion activated or on timers. • Keep shrubbery around windows and doors trimmed. While they provide privacy, they can give the burglar a place to hide. • Make sure locks on your doors and windows are secure and use them. Install deadbolts on doors, wooden dowels can be used in windows and sliding glass doors. • Never leave a house key in obvi- ous places like under the door mat, in a planter, or mailbox. • When on vacation, ask a friend to pick up your mail, newspaper, and mow your lawn or shovel snow. • Always keep your garage door closed and locked. • Install a residential burglar alarm. Speak to a local alarm company to find what is best for your home. • Know who your neighbors are and organize a Neighborhood Watch program. • Make a list of your property along with any serial numbers. • If you come home and find a win- dow or door ajar or broken, do not go in.
