City of Hoover Cooking Oil Recycling Program The City of Hoover has developed a city wide waste vegetable oil recovery effort to not only reduce city sewer maintenance cost but to provide Biodiesel to supplement diesel fuel usage by city owned vehicles. Liquefied animal fats, greases and vegetable oils are often poured into sink drains, but they harden and stick to the insides of sanitary sewer pipes. The buildup can clog pipes, causing raw sewage to back up into homes or overflow from manholes. Because many sanitary sewer pipelines run next to creeks, overflowing sewage often winds up in our streams and lakes. You can help! Please do not dispose of cooking grease or other oils and greases down drain! Pour the grease or oil into a can, cool it, and place it in the trash; or recycle. Although you can bring your oil in any suitable container, for your convenience, the City of Hoover has empty jugs available at the Hoover Fire Stations, Public Safety Center, Hoover Fueling Center as well as the loading dock at the Municipal Complex. Residents may pick one up and then return their used cooking oil to the City.
