Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. The more body fat you have, the higher your risk for a number of diseases. These include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and even certain cancers. BMI does not take into account lean body mass or body frame. Muscular people may have an elevated BMI, even if they have a normal percentage of body fat. So, remember to consider your BMI along with your waist circumference, if you’re particularly muscular. To determine your BMI, use the following table and find your height in the left-hand column labeled “Height.” Move across to your weight (in pounds). The number at the top of the column is your BMI. Note: pounds have been rounded off.
