APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL: CH – NON-EXEMPT CITY OF FONTANA TRAFFIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs either field or office assignments and carries out traffic signal maintenance and repair activities. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: The Traffic Engineering Technician has the responsibility to develop intersection diagrams, collect traffic data, read and understand engineering plans, and test and repair traffic signals. This position receives general supervision from higher level management. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The employee must have the ability to: Provide and accurate quantity list and construction cost estimate for traffic signal plans and projects. Develop intersection diagrams and other drawings in Auto-Cad or other computer graphic format. Provide complete as-build drawings from red-lined changes on prints made by Traffic Section designers. Analyze and evaluate field measurements of streets and intersections to provide data for striping and signal design projects. Manage and organize special projects related to traffic volume maps and data collection for use in traffic projections, trends, cost analysis and data comparison. Assist in preparation of documents to obtain funding for proposed construction projects including Caltrans field review, RTIP or other submittals. Assist in the preparation of traffic control and detour plans for City projects. Prepare work orders for maintenance personnel to place signs, markings and other traffic control devices in the street right-of-way, as required. Employee must perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer. THE ABOVE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY BY THE EMPLOYER. WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires far and near vision in reading written reports and other work related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and customer service. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: A combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have the knowledge of: Comprehend the traffic data that is collected in the field. ---PAGE BREAK--- TRAFFIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN Page 2 Read engineering plans and understanding the terminology of traffic signal equipment and design. Methods, practices and equipment used in traffic control plans, traffic signal specifications, State Specifications and the Green Book specifications. Place TC-III data collector hoses for all three data collection activities: volume, speed and classification. Computer operation in the downloading of field data for processing of final reports. Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible engineering experience, including traffic data collection, traffic data analysis and traffic signal maintenance and operation is desirable. Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in Engineering, Engineering Technology or a closely related field.
