APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL: 6/7/2002 YARD – NON-EXEMPT CITY OF FONTANA PUMP MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment, devices and machinery used in the operation of the City’s pump stations, pool pumps located throughout the City. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The employee must have the ability to: Perform a variety of skilled, journey-level duties involved in the inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and servicing pump stations, and other pumps, wastewater collection equipment, components, facilities and machinery, such as pipes, tubes, rods, seals, gears, motors, bearings, couplings, valves and pumps; tests and monitors equipment and machinery for vibration, bearing temperature and output capacity. Inspect, maintain and repair pumps, valves, motors and other equipment located in lift stations and other points within the wastewater collection and transmission system. Disconnect electrical sources, uses lockout/tagout procedures to block electrical sources; reconnects and operates panel for maintenance purposes. Test, troubleshoot, calibrate, repair and perform preventive maintenance on a variety of electrical and electronic systems, components and devices. Rebuild equipment to manufacturer’s specifications, including motor controllers, transmitters, and devices using operational performance standards, specialized testing equipment. Correct defects in instrumentation. Repair and replace defective parts in motors, pumps, switches and other industrial electrical fixtures. Test, troubleshoot, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on a variety of electronic instruments and mechanical equipment. Inspect equipment installation work performed by contractors. Perform duties in confined spaces, utilizing department safety equipment, policies and procedures. Operate dump trucks, boom trucks, forklift, compressors, cranes, jackhammers, portable and stationary generators, pneumatic, hydraulic and electric tools, and related tools and equipment. Coordinate activities with other sections and divisions. Ensure the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities. Requisition necessary tools, equipment and supplies. Research new operational methods, techniques and equipment and recommends their applications. Plan and lay out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches or verbal instructions; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans and specifications for equipment and machinery. ---PAGE BREAK--- APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL: 6/7/2002 YARD – NON-EXEMPT Responds to emergency situations as necessary. May assist in training or instructing others in the work. May lead the work of others as a project leader. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer. THE ABOVE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTION IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY BY THE EMPLOYER. WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES A combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have the knowledge of: Practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery common to pump stations. Methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of industrial electric and electronic systems, equipment and devices. Safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work; relevant state and federal regulations; codes ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work. Ability to: Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment, systems and machinery, such as valves, motors, pumps and other equipment common to pump stations. Use precision and diagnostic instruments to measure required tolerances of mechanical parts. Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the inspection, maintenance and repair of pumps, maintenance and repair of industrial electric and electronic systems. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Licenses and/or Certifications: Possession of, and continuously throughout employment, a valid Class Drivers License. Possession of California Water Environment Association Certification for Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance is desirable.
