Page 1 of 3 Rev. 06/01/01 City of Fontana Planning Division (909) 350-6717 General Criteria For Naming New Streets It is the responsibility of the developer or street name proponent to make a reasonable effort to abide by the following guidelines: 1. When a street is a continuation or in line with an existing street it should have that same street name. 2. New street names should not sound like an existing street name. Street names that sound different but are spelled similarly to existing names should also be avoided. (See Central Valley Fire District Street List at the Building & Safety front counter.) 3. The spelling and pronunciation should be clear, easy and simple. Words of foreign origin, unless commonly used in American English, should be avoided. 4. Diacritical marks, i.e. (tilde), e (grave accent), (circumflex), etc. are not acceptable. 5. Street names in a Specific Plan or Planned Community should follow a theme or some logical order or grouping. 6. Street names cannot be more than ten (10) letters- not including Avenue, Boulevard, Street, etc. Cul-de-sac street names should be kept shorter for mapping consideration. 7. New streets may be named after residents of the City (alive or deceased) who lived in the Fontana area and contributed to its history and culture. Street names being submitted under this criteria should have a brief description of the person’s contribution included with the nomination. 8. Street names are to be assigned in alphabetical order with placement based on location of the nearest fire station: i.e., name beginning with closest to station, assigned to next street, etc. Page 1 of 2 ---PAGE BREAK--- Page 2 of 3 Rev. 06/01/01 9.
