APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL: YARD – NON-EXEMPT CITY OF FONTANA EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II DEFINITION: Under general and/or immediate supervision from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, makes minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Equipment Mechanic I: This is the entry level class in the Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including beginning level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered equipment. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Equipment Mechanic II: This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Mechanic series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered equipment including the more difficult repairs and overhauls. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. May exercise functional or technical supervision over lower level equipment maintenance staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The employee must have the ability to: Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance, and construction equipment. Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment. Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches. Tune up engines, replacing such components as generators, distributors, relays lights and switches. Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems. Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes. Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for the City automotive and heavy equipment. Maintain work, time, and material records. Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer. THE ABOVE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY BY THE EMPLOYER. ---PAGE BREAK--- EQUIPMENT MECHANIC Page 2 Equipment Mechanic I-II Page I 2 WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have knowledge of: Equipment Mechanic I Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment. Operation and care of internal combustion engines. Safe work practices. Ability to: Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill. Maintain a variety of shop and repair records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Equipment Mechanic II In addition to the qualifications for Equipment Mechanic I, knowledge of: Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City owned light and heavy equipment. Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment. Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in welding and fabrication work. Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City owned equipment. Ability to: Perform journey level equipment mechanical work including the trouble-shooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs work. Work independently in the absence of supervision. ---PAGE BREAK--- EQUIPMENT MECHANIC Page 3 Equipment Mechanic I-II Page I 3 Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs. Assist in the training and supervision of less experienced personnel. Experience: Equipment Mechanic I - One year of experience performing routine automotive maintenance and minor repair work. Equipment Mechanic II - One year of mechanical maintenance experience including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment. Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance including specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.
