APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL: 11/18/2003 CH – NON-EXEMPT CITY OF FONTANA LANDSCAPE TECHNICIAN II DEFINITION: Under general supervision, will assist in planning, directing and organizing the city’s landscape development and renovation projects. This position may exercise technical or indirect supervision of lower level staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The incumbent must have the ability to: Participate in research, prepare reports, and recommend development of landscape parkways, medians, greenbelt, parks and other open space areas. Monitor Capital Improvement programs related to landscape projects. Provide timely plan check service to the Landscape Section including updating of plan check status, comments and any required corrections in the departments permit tracking system. Assist in coordinating landscape capital projects with consultants, city departments and other governmental agencies and the public. Assist in preparation of construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, materials, for landscaping irrigation system, plant material and structures. Participate in the inspection of landscape construction work including compliance with accepted standards, required maintenance, and removal and replacement of plant materials as required. Assist in the development of landscape construction budgets Prepare preliminary project sketches. Prepare landscape construction schedules. Prepare written reports and correspondence as required. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Travel independently throughout the City. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Perform any other tasks of functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer. THE ABOVE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY BY THE EMPLOYER. WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting and turning while entering and exiting a motor vehicle or on foot within the City limits. Incumbents may be required to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires near, far and color vision. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, around moving traffic and frequently deal with irate members of the public. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: A combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Principles and practices of horticultural science including ornamental plants, turf management, pest management, and landscape irrigation design and construction. Methods to resolve grading, drainage erosion, irrigation, and traffic problems. Methods and practices of landscape plan checking and inspection. Applicable Federal, State and municipal laws, codes and regulations. Effective customer service techniques. Method and techniques for effective recordkeeping. EXPERIENCE: Two years of responsible experience in the design and construction coordination of public landscape or related projects is desirable. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in landscape architecture, planning, architecture or a closely related field. LICENSES/CERTIIFCATIONS: Possession of and continuously throughout employment, a valid California Class Driver’s License.
