Following a ceremonial groundbreaking for the City’s first new building, construction will move forward on a project designed to become a landmark there. The groundbreaking for the City Hall expansion and Civic Center on Silver Lace Blvd. began at 5:30 pm on the construction site. This first step in the expansion plan for the Civic Center is the result of years of planning by City Officials and staff. The building, designed by Sheehan -Van Woert- Bigotti Architects in Reno and constructed by United Construction Company, will literally be a community hub incorporated into the existing City Hall. City Planning Commissioner Bill Clegg believes the expansion project will be a tremendous resource. Clegg said, “This building shows great respect for Fernley’s strong heritage as a community where newcomers could succeed. At the same time, it makes a powerful visual statement that speaks to the advanced city services provided inside.” Tom Grady sees the project as “another example of the progressive leadership for the betterment of Fernley.” Mayor David Stix stated, “Not only will this facility open new doors to city services and community activities, it sends a strong signal that this is a vibrant, healthy community with a promising future.” The expansion building addresses long term city needs with space for city staff, including an emergency operations center, planned space for state and county agencies to provide services locally in Fernley, i.e., a possible Department of Motor Vehicles outlet, and county health services, community meeting rooms available for local groups as well as a park plaza for special community events. -End-
