News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 10/21/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Fernley Youth City Council Inaugurated Fernley, NV – October 20, 2006 – Fernley City Clerk Patricia Norman administered the oath of office to the nominated and appointed members of the first City of Fernley Youth Council on Wednesday, October 18, 2006. Mayor David Stix, Jr., and City Manager Gary Bacock initiated the Youth Council, to encourage Fernley youth to learn more about city government. “I really believe in the mission of the Youth Council,” said Mayor Stix, “Giving students the opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship skills while learning about city government and how it works is important.” The Youth Council emulates the Fernley City Council and city staff with a Youth Mayor, Mayor Pro- Tem, five council positions, a Secretary/Recorder, Treasurer and two Public Information Officers and nine At-Large positions. Youth Council members develop a sense of personal growth and achievement, an understanding of city departments and a rapport with community leaders, citizens and elected officials. Members are called upon to help make decisions affecting Fernley's youth as well as participate in numerous activities throughout the year. They will be holding a Council Meeting on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m., at which youth may bring forth their issues and concerns. There will also be Town Hall Meetings, either devoted to a specific topic or open-ended, during the remainder of the school year. The members will also organize community service projects and programs. City Manager Gary Bacock said, “I am glad to see so many young people that want to participate and learn about city government.
