Local residents, students, businesses and city officials joined together to collect trash in the downtown area in hopes to inspire everyone to keep our city clean. The Mayor’s Clean Sweep City-wide Clean-Up took place on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The Clean Sweep event was coordinated by the City Manager’s Office, Parks and Facilities, Community Development, and the Public Works departments. The event was attended by over 110 volunteers that included: Fernley Rotary, Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Relentless Martial Arts, Girl Scout Troop 456, Sherwin Williams, Fernley High School Upward Bound, and Journey Community Church, Nevada Department of Transportation, Silverland neighborhood residents, and many more Fernley individuals. Community participation totaled over 550 volunteer hours for the day’s event. Mayor Goodman stated, “I am very pleased by the community turnout and support for the clean up efforts. The event netted over 200 hours of city staff hours, removed over 4500 pounds of litter and debris (150-40 gal. trash bags) from our streets and neighborhoods, and took 30 gallons of paint for hydrants and graffiti removal. The event demonstrates that the City’s appearance is a priority for our residents and businesses. There are many more clean-up projects and efforts that our city staff is overseeing.
