News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 10/21/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Youth City Council Applicants Sought Fernley, NV – October 4, 2006 – The City of Fernley Parks & Recreation Department, in partnership with ComPass, is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the City of Fernley Youth City Council. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2006. Youth between the ages of 13 and 18, who live in Fernley, are encouraged to apply. They must have a passion to make a difference in their community and must be eager to participate in the city government. The City of Fernley Youth City Council is an appointed body of six youth in the 13 to 18 age group, modeled after the Fernley City Council. They will be recognized as the official youth advisory group to the city council and to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. Youth City Council members are involved with policy recommendations concerning youth, and they support the development of youth to serve the community through active civic participation and constructive decision-making. Youth City Council terms are for one year. Council members actively participate in youth council subcommittees, neighborhood and community meetings, and serve as youth advocates. Council members may expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per month on special youth projects, reports, trainings, and attending meetings. The Youth City Council meets every first Monday evening of each month. The Fernley Youth City Council's vision is to “create an empowered voice for youth.” Its mission is to involve and connect Fernley youth in advising the city government on youth-related issues. The core values are inclusion, engagement, empowerment, leadership and teamwork.
