News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 05/20/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mayor Proclaims May 20th, 2006 As Armed Forces Day in Fernley Fernley, NV – May 20, 2006 - Today at 5:00 pm, Fernley Mayor Day Stix, Jr., will declare May 20th 2006 as Armed Forces Day in Fernley. At a flag raising ceremony at Out of Town Park, kicking off the City’s 2006 Summer Concert Series, the Fernley American Legion will accept the proclamation and perform the ceremonial raising of the American Flag. Below is the wording of the proclamation: WHEREAS, On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day, designating the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, and honoring military men and women of the United States of America; and WHEREAS, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May of each year, and recognizes the men and women of America who have served, and are now in the service of their country throughout the world; and WHEREAS, this is a day set aside for citizens to express their deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in our military, who strive daily to preserve the freedoms, peace and systems of justice in our nation; and WHEREAS, by working together as citizens and soldiers, we create hope in a free world, demonstrating that our faith and ideals of freedom will continue to prevail through a combined effort of dedication to security, strength and preparedness; and WHEREAS, the unselfish acts of generations of America’s military men and women have laid the framework for a strong nation, and will continue on through future generations because of the great efforts and wisdom of those, who are now in a position to protect and preserve the principals that we hold dear; and WHEREAS, the City of Fernley commends and honors our military men and women, and we sincerely express our gratitude for their sacrifices and service, and pray for their safety; NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVID STIX, JR. MAYOR OF THE CITY OF FERNLEY, do hereby proclaim May 20, 2006, as ARMED FORCES DAY IN FERNLEY, NEVADA IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the Seal of the City of Fernley, Nevada to be affixed this Eleventh day of May, two thousand six.
