News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 08/20/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Recognizes Youth in Action Fernley, NV – August 20, 2006 – At last week’s City Council Meeting, Mayor David Stix, Jr., announced Britt Whalen as this month’s recipient of the Mayor’s Youth Citizenship Award. Britt Whalen, a youth team leader and volunteer for Fernley’s ComPaSS (Community Partnership Seeking Solutions) group. Britt serves as the president of the Teens Against Drugs and Alcohol and Tobacco program, a.k.a. “TADAt” and contributes many hours a week to promoting a drug free life style and prevention activities to our teens. “Britt is a fine example of how young people can contribute to Fernley,” said Mayor David Stix, Jr. “Britt volunteers many hours of his time to the ComPaSS program, serving as the mentor, leader and community organizer.” Mayor Stix, has asked Britt to serve on the newly formed Youth City Council, a joint youth program between the City of Fernley and the ComPaSS group. Sponsored by the City of Fernley Mayor’s Office, the City of Fernley Mayor’s Youth Citizenship Awards recognize youth and youth organizations that successfully implemented a service project in Fernley. These projects also have a strong civic action component, to help young people see - and act on - the connection between their community service and the larger public policy implications and solutions.
