News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9869 [EMAIL REDACTED] 03/29/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Thanks Residents for their Patience Fernley, NV—March 29 The City of Fernley understands that road construction delays are frustrating. We appreciate the patience of our residents and wish to assure them that the road improvements are going to outweigh the delays. The City and the contractor are working closely with school officials to make sure that the children crossing the streets to school do so safely. The safety of the children is everyone’s primary concern. According to Cottonwood Elementary School Principal Todd Cutler, the contractor has been working with the school to minimize problems and to ensure pedestrian safety. The contractor is also working with NDOT and city officials to keep traffic confusion to a minimum. Once completed, the end result will include sidewalks, turn lanes, reduced traffic congestion in the neighborhood and a safer roadway and walk way. Additionally, the project will provide additional interconnectivity citywide "We realize road work and re-routing of traffic is inconvenient for drivers. We would like to thank our residents for their patience as we complete this project. Unfortunately, the temporary inconvenience is necessary while improvements to our infrastructure are made to accommodate current and projected growth." said Mayor Stix. "We also appreciate the cooperation of drivers as they observe the construction signs and drive safely where construction work is being done, especially by the schools." BACKGROUND INFORMATION When Cottonwood Elementary was originally constructed, the curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements were not required by Lyon County. Because these improvements were not completed during construction, the City is now faced with having to make these standard improvements. The project was scheduled, at this time, to get the waterlines in before the irrigation season begins and to coincide with the asphalt production that must begin in early spring when the temperatures begin to rise. Mountain West Excavation Company of Nevada was awarded the construction contract by the City of Fernley to widen the area of Farm District Road to include a right turn deceleration lane onto Cottonwood Lane from southbound Farm District Road and a left turn lane from North bound Farm District Road. The improvement project includes a new 18-inch waterline on the north side of Cottonwood Elementary, and reconstruction of the intersection at Farm District and Cottonwood. Should residents have any concerns or questions about the project, the City asks that you do not hesitate to contact the Mayor at 741-7849.
