News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 09/01/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FERNLEY HIRES NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Fernley, NV – September 01, 2006 – City Manager Gary Bacock announced today the selection of Terry Gilbert as the City of Fernley Community Development Director. Terry comes to Fernley from Sarasota County, Florida, where he held numerous senior level management positions related to the planning and development activities. Certified through the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association, Terry is fully qualified in Planning and Development activities and has held each level of land use planner through Principal Planner and Zoning Administrator. Further, Terry has established two county land development agencies. The first agency was in Hillsborough County, Florida, which has a population of a million and the second in Sarasota County, Florida, which has a population of 350,000. As the director of these agencies, he interacted with the citizens, building community, development community, local governments, the Economic Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and the State. Terry is also a Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, where he is currently assigned to the Pentagon as the Deputy Chief of the Office of the Chief of Engineers. He has over 29 years in the military including 16 years on active duty. His most recent active duty was immediately following the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon. He was mobilized for two years and directed the engineer activities within the Army Operations Center Crisis Action Team (Army War Room) at the Pentagon. He has received numerous awards, both civilian and military: US Army DECORATIONS AND BADGES Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster) Army Commendation Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters) Army Achievement Medal Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star) Humanitarian Service Medal Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with Bronze Hourglass and Device) Army Staff Identification Badge Bronze Order of the de Fleury Medal Civilian: Sarasota County Committee for Economic Development Achievement Award Manager of the Year for the Hillsborough County Strategic Government Services Team Planning & Zoning Department Employee of the Year ---PAGE BREAK--- Planning & Zoning Department Outstanding Employee of the Year City Manager Gary Bacock said, “Terry is a respected professional who has worked with development, business and government for 20 years. He will be an asset in coordinating the multiple projects the city is working on with civic, business and community leaders.” Mayor David Stix, Jr., added, “He has a well-rounded background of working with both the public and private sectors on a variety of development issues. He and his wife, Janet, have two sons, Michael age 13 and Scott age 26. His son Scott lives in Orlando, Florida and is a Computer Animator currently working on the next NASCAR video game for EA, Inc. Terry and Janet are originally from New Mexico, where both attended college. Gilbert will begin his duties as Community Development Director on September 25th.
