News Release City of Fernley Gary Bacock, City Manager Voice (775) 784-9851 Fax (775) 784-9839 [EMAIL REDACTED] 06/30/06 www.cityoffernley.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Recognizes Youth in Action Fernley, NV – June 30, 2006 - Sponsored by the City of Fernley Mayor’s Office, the City of Fernley Mayor’s Youth Citizenship Awards recognize youth and youth organizations that successfully implemented a service project in Fernley. These projects also have a strong civic action component, to help young people see - and act on - the connection between their community service and the larger public policy implications and solutions. The nine YOUTH CITIZENSHIP AWARD winners and their adult team members will be recognized by City officials, and presented with a certificate of appreciation, to encourage their continuing advocacy and action in Fernley. “Every young person in Fernley has time and talent he or she can contribute to our community,” said Mayor David Stix, Jr. “Our youth can help in so many ways. Their service to others and our community is just a part of the many acts of kindness for which Fernley is known and is one of the many things that contributes to Fernley’s quality of life,” the Mayor added. The July 2006 recipients are from Universal Tae Kwon-Do’s “Green Team,” an environmental self- defense community service project named “Project Clean Sweep.” The project made up of nine youth, their parents, and other volunteers, a total of 25 participants - was organized by John Mariotti, head instructor and owner of Universal Tae Kwon-Do and DJ Singley, the Project Coordinator. The group organized a clean up of the desert behind the Truck Inn. They picked up garbage, trash and appliances that had been illegally dumped and left in the desert. In total, they collected five truck loads of garbage and hauled it to the transfer station. At the July 5, City Council Meeting (6:00 pm) - Project Clean Sweep will be presented with the Mayor’s Youth Citizenship Award. . # # #
