Topic Name: Your Favorite Park Idea Title: Berg/Animas - trail sytems. Idea Detail: We need to connect all our parks by trails. This means looking at all available right of ways and areas that would lend themselves to trail development. The pipeline right-of-ways running throughout town as well as the ditches would be good places to look at closely. Idea Author: Ed H Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 16 Number of Comments 2 Comment 1: By connecting parks with trails, the trails become extensions of the parks themselves and offer the fun nooks and crannies to explore and enjoy. I By Jeanene V Comment 2: This would also allow us to have more running and bicycle races to add to our events. It can bring in more people from out of town as visitors to compete or watch! I By Jim R Idea Title: Berg Park, because of the walking trails and the river. Idea Detail: My second favorite park is Fairview Park on North Fairview. I live in that neighborhood and the park is used extensively. I appreciate the City of Farmington's willingness to create and maintain our city's parks. Idea Author: Dorothy N Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 6 Number of Comments 1 Comment 1: I agree with you Dorothy on your comment about the City of Farmington. We have so many parks here and they all are beautiful. I do see that we need to focus on savings so we can put that money to good use adding more trails to connect the parks. As stated in a previous post, if we replace the existing lights with solar led lights, we would no longer have to pay for electric to have these lights on all night. Plus they would be brighter and last longer 1 ---PAGE BREAK--- then the current ones. Even our city buildings can go to led lights to save, then work to power the buildings with solar (with grid backup). I By Jim R Idea Title: Kywanis Park Idea Detail: The location of the park is good. It is set down in a little valley that makes it feel away from the city. The wide open grass area with trees on the perimeter is great for games. The volley ball pit and the covered pavilions are really good for older family get togethers. I like the two different equipment areas for the different ages of children. I wish there was a larger bathroom facility. Having 2 or three toilets in each men/women section would be nice. Idea Author: Monica B Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 3 Number of Comments 1 Comment 1: I agree with you Monica. That part is a beautiful setting tucked back in there. Idea Author: Elliott J Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 15 Number of Comments 2 Comment 1: Great idea to create road biking trails. We also need to build up and maintain Farmington's wonderful mountain bike trails. I By Tonya S Comment 2: What type of amenities would you like to see on the trail? I By Cory S Idea Title: Revitalize the downtown area so it is similar to what Boulder, Idea Detail: Colorado has done. Make the downtown pedestrian a pedestrian mall and a place people want to go ! Have local musicians play and have more local artists display their work. Have a large Christmas tree and Santa during the holidays. Clean up the trash along the roads and streets. Make Farmington the cleanest city in New Mexico. Expand the bike trails so you can safely walk or ride a bike all over town. Build another bridge across the river at Pinon HIlls & Main to relieve heavy traffic on Main Street. Idea Author: Rebecca W Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 15 Number of Comments 7 Comment 1: It wouldn't take much to move traffic down to Broadway in order to close downtown. The way traffic runs through there now is too dangerous because people driving down Main don't pay any attention to people walking nor the speed limit. I also think it would 5 ---PAGE BREAK--- be a great place for everyone to hang out, tour shops, listen to live music and see a movie. I By Jim R Comment 2: been in many towns where they closed downtown to walking only. This creates a special atmoshpere to the area. I By Jane B Comment 3: Love those ideas Rebecca! I By Jim R Comment 4: I know OKC revitalized their downtown & called it "Bricktown". It is along the river & has great locally owned restaurants. I would love a restaurant overlooking the river. A great coffee bar and gourmet store selling wine, cheese, chocolates, etc. A specialty candy shop & soda fountain. Highlight local artists, artisans, etc. Anything that you cannot buy at a big box store or at the mall. Have a great Christmas tree and North Pole Village with Santa. I By Rebecca W Comment 5: Cory I know a big movie theater pulled a lot of people in as well as "Toby Keith's Bar and Grill". Both places were almost always packed! Some places that give people things to do is better then stores selling higher priced items. I can do some research on other mall areas that pull in customers if you want. I By Jim R Comment 6: Is there a specific element of the pedestrian mall that or anchor for downtown that you think will bring folks downtown? I By Cory S Comment 7: Love the idea of a pedestrian mall! I would even include a bigger movie theater there or an outside theater to enjoy music, movies etc... There is a mall in Gilbert AZ that is like this and even has some bid tenants in some of the stores, plus old type of diners to bring back memories of the malt shops. Specialty craft shops, clothes stores and such to have local vendors. We need to bring in more things that will attract visitors all year long! I By Jim R Idea Title: Zoo Idea Detail: There's a story in our reading book called, "Here's My Dollar" about a little girl who helps raise money for a local zoo that was going to close. I think a Zoo would be a great idea and educational also! It would also create jobs and bring money into our economy from outside sources. Idea Author: David F Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 12 Number of Comments 2 Comment 1: This is an idea the Farmington CVB has wanted to see happen as well. The Nature Center could also be a good rental spot. I By Tonya S Comment 2: This would be a great idea for ones that live here and tourists also. I By Jane B Idea Title: Create a wilderness park/wildlife corridor along the large wash Idea Detail: drainage which runs through Crestwood Estates and under Crestwood Drive. It could connect with the Lion’s Wilderness Park, Sandalwood Park, BLM land to the north, and on down the drainage to the San Juan River. Create trails for non-motorized use, prohibit ORV use in the area, restore wash banks, surrounding land and natural vegetation, and clean up trash and invasive weeds. I By Cory S 7 ---PAGE BREAK--- Idea Title: A place where people can bike or walk to almost any location Idea Detail: The Riverwalk has such a wonderful trail system - I would love to see biking/walking trails extended throughout the city, with small park/reststops along the way, so people could reach almost any location via bike or walking. This town is small enough that this would be possible, and it would encourage a more active, healthier, "outdoorsy" lifestyle. I would eventually like to see the tri-cities joined by bike trail. Of course, safety issues would need to be addressed first. Idea Detail: The Sycamore Park Community Center has been a rousing success. There are many more kids and families on the east side of town who could benefit from such a community center, perhaps adjacent to Kiwanis Park. It is too far for people to go to Sycamore Park from the east side. Idea Author: Jerry B Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 9 Number of Comments 3 Comment 1: Sycamore Park Community Center has certainly set a standard and is a role model for what a community center can to do unite a neighborhood. We do need more of them and if anybody has not taken the time to visit SPCC, you should do so. It is amazing what the center and its staff have done for the families in that neighborhood! I By Dorothy N Comment 2: Absolutely! I By Flo T Comment 3: They could use the library I By David F Idea Title: Community Gardens Idea Detail: I think we need more of these to help people offset the rising costs of food. It can be a CSA type of garden set up or something similar. Working with the PRCA in areas of the city to utilize some of the properties more efficiently we can feed many people here that can't afford much. Thoughts? Idea Author: Jim R Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 9 Number of Comments 3 Comment 1: Thanks for the thoughtful ideas I By Cory S 9 ---PAGE BREAK--- Comment 2: Yes their garden is beautiful. I pass it everyday going to the high school. A growers market is a great idea as it can create another source of income for local growers. Plus the schools here that have green houses can also sell their plants there as well. I By Jim R Comment 3: It would be nice to offer a Growers Market in the downtown area and possibly provide a space for a community garden. I know there is one church on 30th and Butler that grows a garden during the summer. I By Flo T Idea Title: Pinon Hills Golf Course- New Club House & Maintenance Upgrade Idea Detail: Pinon Hills Golf Course is one of the city's greatest assets. The club house needs a complete make over to accommodate year round events like weddings, social events during the winter, and weddings. It needs to be expanded with a much larger restaurant, dinning area and have an area underneath for golf carts, and locker rooms. The current maintenance shed needs to be moved to the west side of the driving range below the parking lot so materials and supplies can be more easily delivered and distributed to the course without crossover with the players on the course. the area where the existing maintenance shed exists needs to be turned into a year round practice facility. Add a solar system to supply energy to charge golf carts and the course will save another $45k per year! Come on Farmington let's go Golf and have some fun! This place is one of the premier golf courses in the country and one of the City's most valued and attractive draws! Idea Author: Robert C Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 8 Number of Comments 4 Comment 1: The Future is Now. Maintenance is no longer an option…upgrade is the only way forward to maintain a high profile as a premier attraction in golf and the US! Start TODAY! I By Robert C Comment 2: Pinon Hills remains a main attraction in our community, despite the economy. We should do everything we can to maintain the course and continue to market it, especially in the Four Corners. I By Dorothy N Comment 3: In the future for sure. Moving the maintenance area would be a great idea to begin with and the solar energy. Long term, but great ideas to keep in mind. I By Jim R Idea Title: A focal point for Farmington......no room here to describe-- Idea Detail: To Engage Farmington-- From Sue Carlsen 11-27-13 11 ---PAGE BREAK--- Farmington has assets but no focal point, no defining feature... Problem 1--Farmington’s downtown area is in need of urban renewal. Some of the area between the two main streets and the river is drab, gray, and visually empty. No wonder people head east. Problem 2--Farmington is surrounded by a huge dog population and the new animal shelter will be unable to fully cope with the deluge. At the same time, children who long for an animal friend and adults who need stress relief must live in apartments where no dogs are allowed. Problem 3--People in Farmington, as elsewhere, often spend most of their time indoors. Farmington’s population of developmentally disabled adults are often relegated to a monotonous life of repetitive touring of the library, Sycamore Center, big box stores and other inevitably somewhat impersonal public facilities. Problem 4--Farmington... see me for more..... Idea Author: Sue C Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 6 Number of Comments 1 Comment 1: Sue I agree with your first 3 problems. I By Jim R Idea Title: Would love to see enhancements made to Berg / Animas park Idea Detail: I think adding a fishing pond with paddle boat rentals and an automated bike rental system would be a great enhancement to Berg and Animas parks. I think they would attract visitors and locals to the parks. Idea Author: Ingrid G Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 5 12 ---PAGE BREAK--- Number of Comments 1 Comment 1: The River Reach Foundation owns property at Berg Park that has been envisioned for a fishing pond. Because the area is designated "wetlands" the process for creating a pond is not as easy as it would seem. River Reach hasn't had much discussion about it for a few years now as it will likely take city initiative to make it happen due to the regulatory and cost issues. As for bike rentals, this has been one of our goals for sometime. We feel if the trail can be continued upstream to the Museum it would be the perfect site for people to get the bikes and ride. We wish to create a river trail from one end of town to another. Bikes could provide perfect access anywhere along the trail. The overriding issue at this time is obtaining an easement from Browning Parkway to the Museum. I By Ed H Idea Title: A rec center similar to Cortez & Durango Rec centers! Farmington is behind the curve on this growing sport. I would like to see us catch up and begin to promote the sport. Availability of courts is an issue right now. We need an indoor place we can play that offers at least 3 courts and would have times set aside daily. Multiple courts are needed to accomodate the different skill levels of players. We have only 3 outdoor courts at the Cooper Street Tennis Courts (surface is not very good). I would hope to see the City of Farmington marking more outdoor courts. I would be open to discussing this in person with anyone who wants to sit down and talk about it. I could bring some of our current pickleball players to these meetings also. 13 ---PAGE BREAK--- Bicycling is one of my favorite things to do, second only to pickleball! Pinon Hills could be a golf Mecca like Scottsdale, Mesquite, NV, and Bandon Dunes, OR. Hire a consultant to make Pinon Hills GC and Farmington a golf destination known nationwide. The course is 25 years old and due for reinvestment for the next 25 years. The superintendant needs a budget increase to replace sand and repair bunkers and upgrade the irrigation system. A recent Big Idea recommended building a practice facility where the carts are stored, great idea, be sure to include a rebuild of the putting green. I’m sure the Superintendent knows exactly what to do given the funds to do it. Let’s make a plan and ask voters to renew the special gross receipts tax that paid for the golf course, aquatic center, tennis courts and baseball/softball fields. That way the entire community can be involved and benefit. Maybe link the tax resurrection with the trail system, they need help too. We need to be in the forefront and be one of the first cities to be all renewable power. Our trails need lights to be solar powered as well for 14 ---PAGE BREAK--- safety. There are many incentives still out there to help us, but we need all city departments to be on board. Great idea! HOWEVER, I LIVE here and it is already difficult to get around during peak travel times. I have been to Branson and there is a reason that I don't live in Branson, nor would I ever consider living in Branson. YOU CAN'T GET AROUND DURING TOURIST SEASON! The same goes for places like Lake Havasu City, etc. YES, tourism is great for a community! BUT, ONLY IF THE RESIDENTS CAN CO- EXIST IN HARMONY. In this area it seems that we build neighborhoods and then worry about roads and water sources afterwards. I'm sorry, being a resident, I believe you need to build the infrastructure first, then develop. I understand the need for money to do any of these things and perhaps the mindset is that we will attract the tourist, build up the coffers and THEN address the problems. In reality it's the resident taxpayers that pay the bills- think about that. Idea Author: lisa B Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 2 Number of Comments 1 Comment 1: Lisa the only problem that I have seen with getting around town is that most of our street lights are ran off of set timers and not by the magnetic strips in the roads. The censors should help keep the flow going in each direction, but they don't. You can sit at a light for quite a while, even after the flow going the other direction has no more vehicles. We had the same lighting setup where I worked at the City of Apache Junction in Arizona. We finally adjusted them to work off of the censors and traffic moved smoothly, even with the winter visitors. I will add that we do need the tourists. It brings in the much needed money boosting our economy so that businesses can add jobs. That resource helps our cities to not have to add any new taxes and keeps us from needing any subsidies from state and federal levels. Idea Author: Richard R Number of Seconds 0 Number of Comments 0 17 ---PAGE BREAK--- Topic Name: Culture and Arts in Our Community Idea Title: WE NEED A COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER Idea Detail: Dear Friend of the Arts, As you know, the City of Farmington’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department has embarked on an ambitious effort to produce a 5-year Master Plan and has been soliciting input from interested groups and the general public. Studies have shown that in order for a viable and growing art community to exist within a municipality, a public or non-profit community art center has to act as the “hub of the wheel”. Absent this, the art community remains fragmented and struggling. The several galleries, studios, theaters, museums and venues that we have here in Farmington are not designed to do this job and can’t replace it. Therefore, in order for Farmington to nurture the amazing variety of art produced here, support the number of artists who live and work in our region, to say nothing of taking advantage of the proven economic activity generated by the arts in this state, Farmington must adopt the goal of establishing a Community Arts Center. CONTINUED Idea Author: Michael D Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 15 Number of Comments 0 Idea Title: ARTS CENTER (PART 2) Idea Detail: (CONT) At the meeting I attended at the Civic Center last fall, I reminded the hosts that the City had previously promised the Art Council that it could have the use of the former downtown library building after the library was relocated to its current 20th street location. As an Arts Council board member I had done plenty of research in support of this effort. But, for reasons I never learned or can’t remember, when the time came, the City changed its mind, and the old library building became the home of a police substation, Chamber of Commerce and other civic entities. Ten years later, I think all of us in the arts can feel its absence. The City owns property downtown that sit empty, plus, two non-profit organizations already exist that could manage such an enterprise. There is no reason to not take advantage of the opportunity presented by PRCA and try again. I am asking that all of you who are in the arts and/or who love the arts to add your voice to this effort. More activities at Berg Park would be great....bicycle rentals, fishing ponds, food vendors.......These are the requests the Farmington CVB gets from visitors. I By Tonya S Comment 5: Sounds good Ed, thank you. I By Jim R 24 ---PAGE BREAK--- Comment 6: I haven't heard of any plans to add solar lights Jim, but can ask Cory Styron on Thursday at the PRCA Commission meeting. I By Ed H Comment 7: Thank you Saundra. I think they can also add little booths in different areas that would attract small businesses to sell drinks, snacks, etc... maybe even small town type shops that look like huts or cabins and such. A way to draw in more customers. I By Jim R Comment 8: What a great idea Jim. And I also like the idea of connecting these parks. I By Saundra B Comment 9: Ed, are there any plans of adding solar lights to the current park system and trails? I By Jim R Idea Title: Use unique environmental features to provide staging for parks. Idea Detail: Berg Park has the Animas River. Kiwanis Park has the natural stone bluffs. Brookside Park has the rolling terrain and the brook. New parks should be located where unique environmental features exist, preserving those features while building upon their appeal to provide park facilities. Letting the wild life continue to have homes in these areas. Idea Author: Saundra B Number of Seconds 0 Number of Points 9 25 ---PAGE BREAK--- Number of Comments 4 Comment 1: I completely agree with you! We need that kick start and backing. I By Saundra B Comment 2: Absolutely! It is irritating to see all the garbage that is thrown out all over the place because people are too lazy to take care of it properly. Most people don't even know that you can use ground up glass as decorative sand for landscaping or use it in paint to make a reflective paint. There are also machines out there that melts down plastics so that different products can be made out of them. There is so many things that can be done, we just need the city to step up to get this started as it is hard for residents to do much if they don't have the backing. I By Jim R Comment 3: I'm glad you agree Jim. I like Farmington. I don't want it to turn into a dumping ground like Hobbs. I would like options to not waste and keep our city pretty and clean. I By Saundra B Comment 4: I agree with recycling. We have too much stuff going to the dump that can be reused or recycled. Too much lumber, plastic and glass goes there and should be recycled! I By Jim R Idea Title: Water Reduction and Park Enhancements Idea Detail: We need to reduce the amount of water being used at our parks and street scapes as I have seen on a daily basis water running down our streets from sprinklers not adjusted properly or running too long. Even the businesses along Main need to adjust their sprinklers as it covers the sidewalks and runs down the gutters. This will save a lot of water and money! Our parks that are near waterways (rivers and ponds), we need to enhance to bring in more wildlife. I have 3 ponds by my house that attracts deer, duck, geese, fox and raccoons. It is quite relaxing sitting on the back porch watching them. I know they are out there and you can see them on the riverwalk, but we need to think of ways of bringing more in. People love to see them when they can. Have we pushed for rainwater retention for homeowners? This would save a lot of water that is used to water grass and gardens! We need ideas to make this affordable for homeowners and businesses. Usually there is just an empty stretch of dirt next to the street which is better than nothing, but people also park in these areas. There are also some streets that at not well lit or lit at all. I found out the hard way the a section of Schofield is not lit at all. Not a fun thing to discover when walking alone at night. These are two things that I encourage to fix. A picnic area would be good too. The view from up there is one of the best. I By Ed H Idea Title: Downtown and River Connections Idea Detail: Planning and investment are needed to connect the Downtown with the River Trails. 28 ---PAGE BREAK--- Quit building shelters and free food stops which attract the worst elements and start planning real investments in the Downtown. If the City had built the new Library Downtown, Farmington would have a booming Downtown now. It's a fantastic facility, but does anyone walk there? It could have provided a significant part of the River connections. Think ahead and set up a plan for a better Downtown. The Parks plan should incorporate connections to Farmington's greatest Parks asset, the River trails. We need to replace our 34 ---PAGE BREAK--- street lights with solar powered light and LED's and retrofit our building with these as well. We need to focus on creating jobs with solar and less focus on coal power plants since we are shutting down two smelters and losing jobs.
