Knocking It Out of the Park: Celebrating 50 Years of Connie Mack Exhibit Dates • July 26 – November 1 Opening Reception • July 26 • 6:00pm-8:00pm 2014 marks the 50th year Farmington has hosted the Connie Mack World Series. It is not by chance or by accident that this tournament continues to be a success. It has been a team effort from the beginning. Since Farmington hosted its first tournament in 1965, the Connie Mack World Series has grown to be the largest and highest esteemed tournament in the realm of amateur baseball. The Farmington Museum is proud to present this exhibit honoring Farmington’s rich baseball heritage and the legacy of baseball in America. Farmington Museum Exhibit Tours By appointment Let an experienced docent at the Farmington Museum be your host for guided tours of the permanent and visiting exhibits. This program is tailored for young children and their parents, with stroller-friendly walks, activities using all our senses, and, of course, feeding the ducks. Just bring your lunch to the Nature Center at 11:00 to eat inside or out, depending on the weather, followed by a short walk or activity. Activities will be over by 12:30, in time for afternoon naps. Come enjoy the outdoors with your little ones this summer. Tuesday Birders Tuesdays • 8am-10am Join a group of beginning and experienced birders for a walk every Tuesday, and follow the changing seasons. Over 150 species of birds have been seen in Animas and Berg Parks, and this is your chance to see some of them. Bring your binoculars and bird book, or borrow some at the Nature Center. Come early for coffee and to observe birds at the feeders before the walk begins. Brown Bag Birding Thursdays • 12pm-1pm Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat. Poetry Picnics Most Fridays • 6pm June 13 & 27 • July 11 & 25 • August 8 & 22 Bring your picnic to the Nature Center on these summer Friday evenings to eat in the beautiful gardens. Then stay for a short program of poetry readings. Learn about some poets new to you, hear old favorites read aloud, and bring your own poems if you wish. Afterwards, you may enjoy strolling in the park until sunset. Wildlife Wednesdays- Sign Up Now! July 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 • 9am-12pm Kiddos ages 7 to 12 $20.00 for all 5 sessions ($15.00 for members of the Friends of the Nature Center or the Museum Foundation) Need a special summer activity for kids ages 7-11? Wildlife Wednesdays is a five-week series of outdoor activities and hikes at the Riverside Nature Center, every Wednesday morning. Each week’s session is different, as we learn about bugs, birds, trails, the water creatures in the Animas River, plants, geology, and more. Sessions start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 noon, with a snack included. Pre-registration is required by June 27 at the Nature Center or the Farmington Museum. Water Cycle Suncatchers Saturday • June 7 • 10am–11am Make a colorful window decoration to remind you of the water cycle, from sunshine to flowers and rivers. Sit in the Nature Center and watch wildlife from the window as you complete your craft. This is an activity for age 3 and older, including adults. Early Bird Walk Saturday • June 14 • 8am-10am The river parks are the home of over 135 species of birds, and we can see many of them on this morning walk. We may see some nests, and some young birds hatched here this year. Dress for a walk of about 2 miles, and bring binoculars if you have them. No dogs, please. Herbs & Xeriscape Garden Saturday • June 21 • 9am-11am Learn about the many native and non-native plants which grow with very little water, are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, and have many household uses. Learn traditional lore, and tasty recipes. See types of ornamental grasses and water-thrifty lawns. This is a good time to get ideas for your own home landscaping as we tour the Xeriscape Demonstration Gardens. Butterfly Walk Saturday • June 28 • 1pm-3pm Learn about butterflies and other insects on this “catch and release” walk of about a mile in Animas park Learn what plants attract butterflies, what their caterpillars need as food, and how to identify some of our common species. We provide nets and containers for temporarily observing our insect discoveries. This is a program for all ages. Dress for the weather, and for walking off the trails through tall grass. History Walk Saturday • July 5 • 9am-11am Walk to the Veteran’s Memorial and also see many less well-known sites in Animas and Berg Parks illustrating the history of the area. Learn about river history, native and introduced plants, and Farmington history, as well as the national history commemorated by the memorial. Sunset and Moonrise Walk Saturday • July 20 • 8pm–9:30pm Walk in the river parks at sunset, to enjoy glimpses of wildlife and the cool evening breezes along the river by the light of the full moon. Our walk will be about two miles, including a visit to the lighted Veterans Memorial. Butterfly Walk Saturday • July 27 • 10am-12pm Learn about butterflies and other insects on this “catch and release” walk of about a mile in Animas Park. Learn what plants attract butterflies, what their caterpillars need as food, and how to identify some of our common species.
