Schedule of Events Farmington Museum System August and September 2013 302 N. Orchard • Farmington NM 87401 • [PHONE REDACTED] Tue-Sat 10am - 5pm In Animas Park off Browning Parkway • [PHONE REDACTED] Nature Center Hours in summer months (April through September) are 9am – 6pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1pm – 5pm on Sundays Picnic in the Park Families with toddlers and pre-school children are invited to come, every Tuesday, for a picnic at the Nature Center. This program is tailored for young children and their parents, with stroller-friendly walks, activities using all our senses, and, of course, feeding the ducks. Just bring your lunch to the Nature Center at 11:00 to eat inside or out, depending on the weather, followed by a short walk or activity. Activities will be over by 12:30, in time for afternoon naps. Come enjoy the outdoors with your little ones this summer. Tuesday Birders Every Week 8am – 10am Join a group of beginning and experienced birders for a walk every Tuesday, and follow the changing seasons. Over 150 species of birds have been seen in Animas and Berg Parks, and this is your chance to see some of them. Bring your binoculars and bird book, or borrow some at the Nature Center. Come early for coffee and to observe birds at the feeders before the walk begins. Every Thursday 12pm-1pm Brown Bag Birding Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat overlooking the wetlands. Anyone needing handicapped access may drive to the parking area right outside the building Botanical Art of O.M. Clark Exhibit September 1 – October 31 Ora M. Clark was a teacher in Aztec during the 1940’s and 1950’s, and spent his summers studying and drawing the native plants of the Southwest. He started the plant collections and lists in several national monuments, and left a fine collection of plants and art to the University of New Mexico. We will be showing some of his original colored botanical illustrations from the Farmington Museum collection. It’s a Walk in the Park: A Class Just for Adults September 4, 11, 18, 25, and October 2, 9, 16, & 23. 9am – 11am San Juan College’s Encore Program sponsors this class, designed for adults and taught by Donna Thatcher of the Farmington Museum. Each meeting will be a walking tour of one of Farmington’s parks. Plants, birds, wildlife, history, and features of the park will be the topics. Register through San Juan College Community Learning Center, 566-3214, beginning August 16. Bird Walk Saturday • August 3 • 8am – 10am Young birds are leaving their nests now, and they and their parents will be seen along the park trails as we walk about two miles through Animas and Berg Parks. We will begin with the view over the Nature Center wetlands. Bring binoculars if you have them. This is a good beginning walk for birders of all ages. Poetry Picnic Friday • August 9 • 6pm Bring a picnic to eat in the garden. Afterwards, enjoy reading and listing to poetry for a short time. The theme is “Summer.” The park is open until sunset for walking and enjoying the woodlands and riverside. Split-willow Animals Saturday • August 17 • 1pm – 3pm Small animals made by folding and wrapping split willow wands have been found in archaeological sites thousands of years old. Try your hand at this ancient craft, using willow cuttings from Animas Park, and take home your own creation. Some patience is required at first, so this is recommended for people 10 and older. September 5 September 12 September 19 September 26 Toddler Playdate Wednesday • 10am-12pm Playdates are designed for families with young children to develop early motor skills and find new playmates. Visit our Tot’s Turf or just join us in a fun and engaging activity. Activities are offered each week to encourage children’s imaginations and exploration of the world around them. NOTE: New Time-Family Art Saturdays Starting September 2013 11am to 1pm September 14- Tic-Tac-Toe Mat Take your Tic-Tac-Toe on the go. Come and test your sewing skills and make your very own game. No sewing experience necessary. Don’t forget your imaginations. September 28-Crafty Baskets No weaving necessary with these baskets. Join us for traditional favorite hands-on activities and crafts that bring the past alive. Apple pressing, butter churning, candle making, log cabin building, leather stamping, and biscuit making over an open fire will all be a part of this exciting event. Admission is free. Join us on the second Saturday of the month, May thru September, for a fun and informative hike that explores the cultural and natural history of the Four Corners region. In August participants can explore the woodland and meadow trails of the Butler Ranch in Dolores, Colorado. Participants will also get a chance to attend the annual Escalante Days, which includes a short ride on the historic Galloping Goose train. Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by registering online at webtrac.fmtn.org or by coming into the museum. The cost is $10 per person and includes transportation and lunch. History Hike – Mesa Verde National Park Saturday • September 14 • 8am – 5pm History Hikes are back at the Farmington Museum! Join us on the second Saturday of the month, May thru September, for a fun and informative hike that explores the cultural and natural history of the Four Corners region. In July participants will have the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Ancestral Puebloans with a day trip to Mesa Verde National Park. A tour of Cliff Palace will be included, so please be prepared for ladder climbing! Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by registering online at webtrac.fmtn.org or by coming into the museum. The cost is $15 per person and includes transportation, lunch, and a tour ticket. Summer Terrace Music Series Saturdays • June – August • 6pm – 7:30pm Join the Farmington Museum at Gateway Park each Saturday evening during the summer months for some local live entertainment at our 10th Annual Summer Terrace Music Series. Learn a little about the devastating Main St. fires, early architecture, pioneer community builders, and more! This program is FREE and available to all ages. Transportation will be provided. Bisti Badlands Full Moon Hike Thursday • September 19 • 6pm – 10pm Every wondered what hoodoos looked like in the moonlight? Join the Farmington Museum for a hike in the Bisti Badlands during the Full Harvest Moon and find out! Space is limited. Admission to the exhibit is free. Please call (505) 599-1174 for more information. “An Adventure in the Arts” July 20th – September 21st Don’t go to Santa Fe or Denver for great art, because great art is coming to the Four Corners! Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol are just two of the many talented and famous 20th-century artists whose work will be featured this summer at the Farmington Museum in the visiting exhibition, “An Adventure in the Arts.” Admission for this special exhibition will be $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID, and $2 for children over 2 years. Farmington Museum Exhibit Tours By appointment Let an experienced docent at the Farmington Museum be your host for guided tours of the permanent and visiting exhibits. Tours are FREE and available to the public by appointment. Any size group is welcome! Poetry Picnic Friday • August 23 • 6pm Bring a picnic to eat in the garden, followed by a few minutes of reading favorite poetry. Then, if you wish, walk in the park until sunset and enjoy the fragrant plants as you watch for deer and other wildlife. Dragonfly Walks Saturday • August 24 9:30am – 11pm for Adults and 11am – 12pm for families with children Join visiting expert April Baisan and Nature Center staff on a walk to observe and learn about dragonflies. We will catch a few for up-close study, as well as watch them in their river and wetlands habitat. Binoculars are helpful, so bring them if possible. The early walk may be a little more technical, for adults, and the later walk will be especially designed for children and their families. Bird Walk Saturday • September 7 • 8am – 10am Birds are beginning to migrate, and we may see some unusual avian visitors as they pass through, stopping to rest along Farmington’s rivers. Traditional Knowledge of Plants Wednesday • September 14 • 9am – 12pm Find out how traditional peoples used plants for dyes, foods, household items, and many other things. This workshop includes a walk of about a mile to see plants in the park, and some hands-on activities to try some samples. Please call in advance to sign up, as space is limited. Art’s Alive! Wednesdays • 3pm – 4:30pm Art’s Alive is a “free” drop-in after-school arts and crafts program for children 7 years and older. Come early and be dressed to make art! This music, story-telling, and crafts program will remain the same, but will now be offered twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Come early and be prepared to get musical and messy! Friday • August 2 • 3pm – 5pm Kids 8 years and older will enjoy this FREE class dedicated to the ancient art of mosaics. Held the first Friday of each month, June thru August, kids will learn how to make several different forms of mosaic with a variety of objects, from tiles and marbles, to seashells and glass.
