COMPREHENSIVE HOMELESS ASSISTANCE PROVIDERS C.H.A.P. Regular Meeting May 22, 2014 This month’s meeting was hosted by Greg Allen from San Juan Safe Communities Initiative (SJSCI). Mr. Allen gave an overview of the SJSCI and some of the programs that they support and are involved in. SJSCI is not a Community Service Organization but they are there to help and support the Community Services that address social issues. He gave an overview of their website at www.sjsci.org and the many resources that are available to the Community. His website has an event page along with a Community calendar where Agencies can promote their fundraisers and or events. If any Agency is interested, they can email Greg at and he will post the event on his website. He highlighted the “You Matter Program” where they pick 12 high school students to be role models for the area children and talk to them about making good choices in their lives. If anyone would like to nominate a student for their 2015 team, they can go to their website at www.umattr.com. SJSCI is also partnering with the San Juan College on the Getting Ahead Program. It is a group of 8 to 12 people to address issues like financial literacy and to reach out for the resources that can assist them. They are also reaching out to college students who fit this category and plant the seeds. Leigh Irvin relayed that Debe Betts from San Juan Catholic Charites stated that they are facing financial emergency and if any one could help them it would be greatly appreciated. Jessica Stopani, Masada House briefly spoke regarding sources of their funding and that they had clothes to donate to San Juan Catholic Charities. Amy Wener, ECHO gave updates on their organization and sources of their funding. Julie Baird, City of Farmington reminded everyone of the CDBG workshops that were being held regarding needing additional input and confirmation of the results from the survey taken earlier. Farmington is an entitled city for Federal funds and there are certain criteria that have to be met for receiving of funds They are also working on a Comprehensive 5 years plan to concentrate on their funding . The workshops are being held at 3:00 at the Civic Center and 5:30 at the Sycamore CC today. ---PAGE BREAK--- Georgette Allen, Police Department gave an update regarding JIP and the program was going very well. They are also working to put a policy in effect regarding responding to incidents with mental health issues. They are working with a local group of parents with children who have mental health issues, like autism, who wander away and go missing. Officer Booker is working in putting together a policy in regards to responding to issues like this. They are also looking into a program called Smart911. This is a tool for citizens to create a profile for their families that will be available to the dispatchers. Convicted by Christ is a men’s support group for those coming out of prison. It is a faith based support group that is held at the World Harvest Center. This group leans more to the side of spiritual help. Their website is
