BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SJC Want a “Big?” Sycamore Park Community Center is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide a year round site-based program for kids ages 5 – 13. For an application or more information, call Natalie at 566-2481. TUNES FOR TOTS (Formerly MUSICAL MONDAYS) Musical Mondays is Tunes for Tots! This music, story-telling, and crafts program will remain the same, but will now be offered twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting in September at the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. TUESDAYS PICNIC IN THE PARK FOR PRESCHOOLERS Preschool children and their families bring lunch and meet at the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway for a picnic followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks, and go home in time for naps. This program continues every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. throughout the spring and summer. You got that right. August 4 - Weaving Sunflowers Time to weave the flowers. It’s simple - plate, scissors, yarn. August 25 - Egyptian Paper Beads The people of Egypt have been making beads since the time when the great pyramids were built, 5000 years ago. NOTE: Time for Family Art Saturday is11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. starting in September September 14 - Tic-Tac-Toe Mat Take your Tic-Tac-Toe on the go. Come and test your sewing skills and make your very own game. No sewing experience necessary. Don’t forget your imaginations. September 28 - Crafty Baskets No weaving necessary with these baskets. Come and make a super cool basket our of popsicle sticks and plenty of glue. Don’t forget your imaginations! NOW – SEPTEMBER 21 AN ADVENTURE IN THE ARTS Great art is here in the Four Corners! Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol are just two of the many talented and famous 20th-century artists whose work will be featured this summer at the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Mains, in the visiting exhibition, An Adventure in the Arts. Admission for this special exhibition will be $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID, and $2 for children over 2 years. For more information call (505) 599- 1174. JULY 31 – AUGUST 2 ART FOR KIDS Want to be an artist, but not exactly sure where to start? Come to E3 Children’s Museum & Science Center, 302 N. Orchard, and take the first step in discovering your creative side! Learn the basics of art with fun projects that will help you take that leap into becoming a better artist. Classes are from noon to 2:00 p.m. and are free. Info: (505) 599-1425 July 31 - Connect the lines and fill them in! August 1 - Texture, space, depth, oh my! August 2 - Let’s put it all together! AUGUST 2 MOSAIC MADNESS Come to the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main St. where kids 8 years and older will enjoy this FREE class dedicated to the ancient art of mosaics from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Held the first Friday of each month, now thru August, kids will learn how to make several different forms of mosaic with a variety of ---PAGE BREAK--- objects, from tiles and marbles, to seashells and glass. AUGUST 3 BIRD WALK Meet at Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway at 8:00 a.m. for walk of about 2 hours. Young birds are leaving their nests now, and they and their parents will be seen along the park trails as we walk about two miles through Animas and Berg Parks. We will begin with the view over the Nature Center wetlands. Bring binoculars if you have them. This is a good beginning walk for birders of all ages. Info: (505) 599-1422 AUGUST 3 PAINT LIKE JASPER JOHNS: 3D-PAINTING To celebrate the opening of the visiting exhibition, “An Adventure in the Arts,” the Farmington Museum will be offering a FREE fine arts program, Paint Like a Famous Artist, workshops for families every Saturday, July 20 through August 10, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Designed for children 8 years and older, each class will feature an art project in the style of an artist featured in the exhibition. Info: (505) 599-1174 AUGUST 7 & 14 SWIM SHUTTLE Meet at Sycamore Park Community Center, 1051 Sycamore, for the Swim Shuttle to Brookside Pool, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. All participants must be 6 years or older, have a signed permission slip, and fee of $1.50 to attend. Remember, basketball shorts are not allowed and you must have proper swimwear. Info: (505) 566-2480 AUGUST 9 FIRST TEE 9 HOLER CLUB Come to Civitan Golf Course, 2100 Dustin, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m., for this playing class designed for PAR level and older PLAYer level kids who are able and anxious to play more golf. The 9 Holer Club is a chance for experienced Juniors to get on the course. Brief instruction will be given where needed on the full swing and short game during the warm up time. Kids will be paired up and sent to the #1 tee. Play will be supervised by the instructor and help will be provided for course management, pace of play, rules and etiquette. Cost per day: $6 for Civitan Pass Holders) AUGUST 9 FAMILY NIGHT SCRAMBLE Junior golfers can drag Mom and Dad off the couch and onto Civitan Golf Course, 2100 Dustin for tee times starting between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Adults will play set up tees appropriate for their ability. The format will consist of two person scrambles, 1 adult and 1 junior, you can make you own foursomes. Fees are $20 dollars for non pass holders, $15 for pass holders and kids play for free. Fees include golf, carts and a hot dog, chips and a drink from the Grill on the Hill. Prizes will be donated by Pinon Hills Pro Shop. AUGUST 13 SKATEWAY USA FIELD TRIP Join us at Sycamore Park Community Center, 1051 Sycamore, for a trip to Skateway USA from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Fees are $5 to get in and skate rental is $2 for quads or $3 for blades. AUGUST 17 SPLIT-WILLOW ANIMALS 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Come to the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Small animals made by folding and wrapping split willow wands have been found in archaeological sites thousands of years old. Try your hand at this ancient craft, using willow cuttings from Animas Park, and take home your own creation. Some patience is required at first, so this is recommended for people 10 and older. We will be open for public swim on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. only and limited to the leisure pool only. Info: (505) 566-2480 AUGUST 24 DRAGONFLY WALKS Come to Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. for adults, and from 11:00 a.m. to noon for families with children. Join visiting expert April Baisan and Nature Center staff on a walk to observe and learn about dragonflies. We will catch a few for up-close study, as well as watch them in their river and wetlands habitat. Binoculars are helpful, so bring them if possible. The early walk may be a little more technical for adults, and the later walk will be especially designed for children and their families. Sycamore Park Community Center, 1051 Sycamore St., is holding a community yard sale to encourage fall cleaning before the winter months. Hey kids ages 7-14!! This program is back for the fall! Come to the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd., the 2nd Saturday of each month through November, 5:30 to 10:00 p.m., for an evening full of fun activities! Dodgeball, basketball, wallyball, four square, music, movies, board games, good eats, and more is on the agenda! This is a great place to hang out with your friends! Event is planned and supervised by the Recreation Center staff, with entry sign-in and sign-out. The Recreation Center is closed to the public during this event. Don't miss the party! Enjoy antique tractors, engines, and vehicles at this annual event. A highlight of the show is a tractor pull on Saturday.
