Month of September All through September, the City of Farmington Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs will conduct a photo contest. Submit your photo essay to tell us how YOU have fun! Your fun doesn’t need to be in Farmington, we want to see your favorite way to relax, play, or recreate. Photos can be taken at any time, or any place, as long as they are respectful, responsible, and reasonable. This program is to benefit research into creating a Master Plan for the City of Farmington’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs (PRCA). It’s easy!! Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol are just two of the many talented and famous 20th-century artists whose work will be featured this summer at the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main St., in the visiting exhibition, An Adventure in the Arts. Admission for this special exhibition will be $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID, and $2 for children over 2 years. Clark Exhibit Sunday, September 1 – Tuesday, October 31 Ora M. Clark was a teacher in Aztec during the 1940’s and 1950’s, and spent his summers studying and drawing the native plants of the Southwest. He started the plant collections and lists in several national monuments, and left a fine collection of plants and art to the University of New Mexico. Come to the Riverside Nature Center, in Animas Park off Browning Parkway so view some of his original colored botanical illustrations from the Farmington Museum collection. First Swing Adaptive Golf Clinic! 7:30- a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 11, Deadline Friday, September 13 – Program to train the trainers 7:30 a.m. – Noon Saturday, October 12 – Professional instruction for participants with disabilities First Swing Golf Clinic presented by the Farmington Living Life After Stroke Support Group. The train-the-trainer clinic will be conducted by Instructors from The National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA). The morning session of the first day will be held at San Juan College, Room 9008, in the Henderson Fine Arts Building. The class is designed for local therapists and golf Pros who will be instructed on how to work with disabled persons who want to golf. The afternoon session will be held at Piñon Hills Golf Course, where the participants will put into practice what they learned in the classroom, in order to facilitate the free clinic for disabled persons on the second day. ---PAGE BREAK--- If you are a golf professional, occupational therapist (OT), physical therapist (PT), physical therapist assistant (PTA), or speech therapist (SLP), we invite you to attend the clinic, and to take this opportunity to help enrich our community. Additionally, attending therapists will receive 1.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for their both days of participation, through the NMAPTA OTA and SLP. There is a registration fee of $25.00 for all attending therapists to cover the cost of Continuing Education Units. Registration deadline, for attending therapists, is Friday, September 13, 2013. The second day at Piñon Hills Golf Course will facilitate the free session for disabled persons who want to golf. The trainers will work with them one on one. Participants need to bring golf clubs (driver and putter), comfortable clothing for golf, sunscreen, water, and a desire to play golf. If you do not have clubs, please let Gary Willmart know by October 1, so loaner clubs can be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Ancestral Puebloans with a day trip to Mesa Verde National Park. Discover the basics of acting through improvisation, games, monologues, and scene work. Have fun crafting new scenes and making new friends. State staff will be presenting information on the upcoming changes to NM Medicaid which will be effective January, 1, 2014. 1 to 2 representatives from each of the four State contracted Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) will also be providing information. Punt, Pass, and Kick 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 27 The Farmington Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department will host a NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition on Friday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. Young pro football fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills and showcase their talents in punting, passing, and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 6 – 15. Age classification is as of December 31, 2013. Entry forms are available online at or at the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd. In order to participate, each child must have a parent or guardian complete an entry form and bring a copy (not the original) of the child’s birth certificate to the event. Participants must wear soft sole gym shoes and will not be allowed to participate with football shoes, cleats, turf shoes, or bare feet. This semi-annual event is located in Berg Park at the intersection of San Juan Blvd and Scott Ave. Bring your yard trimmings, metal, household non-hazardous trash, and yard waste from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Do not bring items such as motor oil, paint, liquids of any kind, air conditioning units, tires, batteries, cement, bricks, or Russian Olive and Pyracantha trimmings (they make the mulch unusable).
