AUGUST Senior Health and Fitness: Drink More Water Please drink a glass, or two or three, of water today. If a cup of coffee with meals is the extent of your fluid consumption you aren’t drinking enough water. Drinking eight glasses of water a day is an old wives tale, but that’s hard to believe. Have you taken a peek at your urine lately? If your urine isn’t clear or straw colored, it is a sure sign that you are not drinking enough water. Dehydration is a problem for seniors because the body’s thirst mechanism is not as reliable as it used to be, but think about it: two-thirds of your body weight is water. Water is so essential that you can only live a few days without it. If you take in less water than you need you will become dehydrated. You can become dehydrated if you get too hot, are running a fever, have had diarrhea or vomiting or just aren’t getting enough fluids into your body. Seniors are particularly susceptible to dehydration because: Diminished thirst mechanism: Your brain isn’t telling you that you are thirsty. Medications: Many medications that you take contain diuretics that attempt to regulate fluid buildup; if you excrete more than you are taking in dehydration may occur. Check with your doctor to see if you should be drinking more. Decreased kidney function. You don’t necessarily need more water as you get older, but it does take a conscious effort to make sure you get enough. Carry a water bottle with you. If you don’t drink enough water you may experience confusion and disorientation. Studies indicate that even mild dehydration can mess with your mental abilities, decrease your energy level, cause dizziness, irritability or faintness. Before asking for a new pill to treat the above mentioned treat yourself to a refreshing glass of water. The “cure” may just be a few glasses of water away. Water is the best way to replenish fluids but there are many other liquids that will do the trick. If you hate water you can try flavoring it with juices, drink herbal tea, or have a cup of broth with your meals. Treat yourself to bottled, sparkling or filtered water for an extra treat and eat juicy fruits and vegetables. Your hydrated body will thank you, and you will feel so good. “Exercise” Senior Activity Center Fitness Center, Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, Pilates, Line Dance, Chair “Weigh In” (held every Friday) 10:00am – 12:00pm Senior Activity Center Check your weight weekly with Omega.
