A new, larger and more animal-friendly shelter will soon become a reality for San Juan County. Located on a convenient site off Browning Parkway at Animas Park (near the entrance to Farmington Municipal Operations,) the new shelter will contain about 15,000 square feet with roomy accommodations for 170 dogs, 130 cats, and 5 exotic animals. The 35-year-old present animal shelter, crowded between the city’s water treatment and electric power plants, has no room for expansion. Animals are severely overcrowded and, more than 60 per cent are euthanized annually. The primary goal of the new shelter, as advocated by the Pet Project and City of Farmington, will be to keep animals for a longer period to encourage adoptions, offer conference rooms for counseling and education, provide the housed animals special physical and mental care, and create a positive animal/client experience. While the basic cost for construction of the new building is primarily covered by funds from the City of Farmington, San Juan County and New Mexico capital contribution, much more will still be needed to upgrade interior areas, landscaping and provide furnishings and supplies. Your assistance is still needed to provide the ultimate benefit for animals and our community.
