The MPO is a federally mandated Regional policy body required in urbanized areas with populations over 50,000 and designated by local officials and the governor of the state. The MPO is responsible, in cooperation with the local entities, the state DOT, transit, and the public, for carrying out the metropolitan transportation planning requirements of federal highway and transit legislation and for developing comprehensive transportation plans through a continuing planning process. The MTP identifies transportation projects and priorities, policies and actions for roads, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, freight, and aviation. The MTP also outlines strategies for addressing safety, accessibility, mobility, and connectivity for all modes. ---PAGE BREAK--- W hy Hav e an M T P The MTP identifies the issues that impact our community that need to be addressed. It demonstrates how we will invest in our transportation future. The update process will include:  Vision and goals/objectives  Current & future population/employment data  Identify and prioritize project alternatives for road, transit, and bicycle/pedestrian  Freight and other modes  Safety and security  Environmental mitigation activities  Financial plan  Public participation & involvement 2040 MTP Guiding Our Transportation Future 2040 MTP Pedestrian Bicycle Transit How T o Become Involv ed Public participation is a major part of the MTP update process and it is important to have the community’s voice in this planning process. If you are interested in getting involved in transportation planning that affects your daily life and your community, here are a few ways to do that:  Go to the MPO website (www.farmingtonmpo.org) to learn more about MTP planning activities and other MPO projects  Have MPO staff give a presentation to your club or organization to inform your members about the MTP process  Contact us about adding your name to our mailing list to receive our quarterly newsletter and meeting agendas  Contact us at: [EMAIL REDACTED] or at [PHONE REDACTED] for more information or with any ques- tions, comments, or concerns PLANNING FOR TOMORROW TODAY T he Planning Proce ss The Farmington MPO is responsible for developing the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) which is the long range planning document that addresses transportation needs for the next twenty years. The MTP, which is required by federal law, is updated every five years and is the framework for transportation decisions. The MTP covers all modes of travel to address future transportation problems and concerns. It is a cooperative effort among the MPO, its entities of the City of Aztec, Bloomfield, and Farmington, and San Juan County, NMDOT, Red Apple Transit, interested parties, and the public. Adoption of the 2040 MTP is targeted for April 2015.
