BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SJC Want a “Big?” Sycamore Park Community Center is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide a year round site-based program for kids ages 5 – 13. MISS INDIAN FARMINGTON NOW - JUNE 7, APPLICATIONS TAKEN Miss Indian Farmington 2012-2013 competition will be held at the Farmington Civic Center on Friday, June 14 from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. Eligibility requirements include: 12-18 years old, Farmington resident, proof of tribal enrollment. Main St., from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Musical Mondays is a music, story-telling, and crafts program. Come early and be prepared to get musical and messy! The program will be outside on the terrace when weather permits and inside when inclement. The recommended age for Musical Mondays is Pre-K through 1st grade, although all are welcome! TUESDAYS PICNIC IN THE PARK FOR PRESCHOOLERS Preschool children and their families bring lunch and meet at the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway for a picnic followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks, and go home in time for naps. This program continues every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. throughout the spring and summer. June 29 - Weaving with Hula Hoops Let the Hula Hoop be your loom, and old t-shirts be your yarn. What more can I say?? July 27 - Film Canister Rockets Oh yeah, you read right. We are making rockets. Come by and make your very own film canister rocket. Is this rocket science??? You got that right. MAY 28 SUMMER YOUTH RECREATION JUNE PROGRAM REGISTRATION Programs and classes will include soccer, basketball, volleyball, crafts, cooking, tennis, t-ball, Heather McGaughy Children’s Theater, and much more! Online registration for all June activities will begin Tuesday, May 28, 8:00 a.m., at webtrac.fmtn.org. Walk-in registration will begin on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd. June Session dates are June 3 to June 28. FRIDAY, MAY 31 SUMMER KICKOFF PARTY Ages 7-14, come start your summer with Farmington Recreation Center at our Kickoff Party held at the Sand Courts next to the Farmington Aquatic Center, 1151 N. Sullivan. From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., play games like limbo, horseshoes, and knockout. Play with giant parachutes and do relay races. Join us for hot dogs, chips, and drinks for lunch, plus root beer floats at the end of the party. Finish the event with kids challenging the 2013 Summer Recreation Staff to a game of Sand Volleyball! JUNE 3 – 7 PINON HILLS JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM Class is conducted under a relationship with The First Tee of San Juan County, NM. This program is takes place at Pinon Hills and Civitan Golf Courses (depending on the date) for one week with times based on age groups. Ages 11 – 12 from 8:00 – 9:15 a.m.; ages 9 – 10 from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m.; ages 7-8 from 11:00 a.m. to 12: 15 p.m. The program will focus on developing new students based on The First Tee Code of Conduct and expose them to the Nine Core Values of the program. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn the game of golf or build upon existing skills. The cost is only $45. JUNE 5 COWBOY & COWGIRL ROUND-UP Ages 3 - 5, join the Farmington Recreation Center staff at Veterans Park from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. for an exciting Preschool Adventure. Have fun seeing what it is like to be a cowboy or cowgirl. Play a game of horseshoes, make a country inspired craft, and listen to a story. Watch for other Preschool Adventures to be offered on Wednesdays, June - July. Come to one or come to them all! Each adventure will include a snack. $5.00 per adventure. Join us at E3 Children’s Musuem & Science Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for Pinching Pennies, Polka Dot Penny Pitch, Penny Spoon Races, Coin Drop Race and MuCh, MuCH MoRE. The cost for the Penny Party is 150 pennies (that is a role and a half of pennies or $1.50), make sure you bring pennies!!! We will not have pennies available to make change. Info: (505) 599-1425 JUNE 7, JULY 5, & AUGUST 2 MOSAIC MADNESS Kids 8 years and older will enjoy this FREE class held at the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main St., 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Classes are dedicated to the ancient art of mosaics, held the first Friday of each month, June through August. Kids will learn how to make several different forms of mosaic with a variety of objects, from tiles and marbles, to seashells and glass. Attend one or all! Space is limited. Info: (505) 599- 1174 JUNE 8 EARLY BIRD WALK Meet at the Riverside Nature Center at 8:00 a.m. The river parks are the home of over 135 species of birds, and we can see many of them on this 2 hour early morning walk. We may see some nests, and some young birds hatched here this year. Dress for a walk of about 2 miles, and bring binoculars if you have them. No dogs, please. Info: (505) 599-1422. JUNE 8 CAR SHOW AND CRAFT FAIR Support the Sycamore Park Community Center, 1051 Sycamore St., and come out to from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., to enjoy a car show, craft fair, and day full of activities for the entire family. There will be food vendors, games for kids, live music, and a burn out contest Car classes include Low Riders, Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Muscle Cars, 4x4, Trucks, Low Rider Bikes, Original, and Construction. Info: (505) 566-2481. JUNE 10 – 14 CHILLIN’ AT THE REC! Ages 7 – 13 -we know you want to just chill this summer, so why not come chill with us? This Kool Summer Day Camp at the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will have plenty of games and activities that are all about the “freeze”. Be prepared to get wet when we play fun games with water. On Friday of this week we will go to the Fun Friday Special “Splish Splash”. Don’t miss out on all the fun! Orchard, for some rocket fun 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Develop and blast off your very own rocket creations, starting with simple straw rockets and work up to exciting Egganautics. Tickets are $4 per person and must be purchased in advance, online at webtrac.fmtn.org or at the Community Center. Ticket price includes a weenie roast, continental breakfast, a picture, and an evening of games and activities. Who does not like jamming out to music? We will be dancing to the Cupid Shuffle and the Electric Slide, playing Just Dance on the Wii, and you can even join in during Karaoke. There will be tons of music and we will have pizza for lunch. The best part is that you do not even have to get dressed up because we encourage everyone to come to this party in their pajamas! We will have games and activities, not only about constellations, but also about our favorite movie stars, and even the 4th of July! We will watch a movie about what is out there beyond our world, make crafts for the 4th of July, and even have a day to come dressed up as your favorite “star”. On Friday we will attend the Fun Friday Special called Star Spangled Celebration and Picnic. You are sure to become star crazy this week! Participants must bring a lunch and two snacks each day. The leisure pool will remain open for public swim from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The cost will be $3.00 per person to swim. Come cheer on your local swimmers. JUNE 29 BUTTERFLY WALK Meet at the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Learn about butterflies and other insects on this “catch and release” walk of about a mile in Animas park Learn ---PAGE BREAK--- what plants attract butterflies, what their caterpillars need as food, and how to identify some of our common species. We provide nets and containers for temporarily observing our insect discoveries. This is a free program for all ages. Dress for the weather, and for walking off the trails through tall grass. JULY 4 SKATEBOARD COMPETITION Sponsored by Sycamore Park Community Center, come to Brookside Park, at Dustin and 20th St., for a FREE skateboarding competition. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. with the competition beginning at noon. Competition is a game of SKATE with a double elimination bracket. There will be three age divisions: 10 & under, 11-14, and 15-Up. The competition is free, but all competitors must sign a waiver. Prizes will be awarded to the top three in each age group. JULY 4 - 7 ANNUAL FREEDOM DAYS CELEBRATION Farmington celebrates the Fourth of July with a variety of special events, including fireworks, auction, parade and a triathlon. Wildlife Wednesdays is a five-week series of outdoor activities and hikes at the Riverside Nature Center on Wednesday mornings. Each week’s session is different, as we learn about bugs, birds, trails, the water creatures in the Animas River, plants, and more.
