The delegation presented a convincing story and won the bid by one vote. 2014 marks the 50th year Farmington has hosted the Connie Mack World Series. It is not by chance or by accident that this tournament continues to be a success. It has been a team effort from the beginning. Since Farmington hosted its first tournament in 1965, the Connie Mack World Series has grown to be the largest and highest esteemed tournament in the realm of amateur baseball. Rockin’ Geology is an exciting class that will explore plate tectonics, how volcanoes form and erupt, volcano types, and the properties of lava. Hands-on experiments will be featured, including a do-it-yourself volcanic eruption. What’s the Matter? Grades K-6 Ever wondered what the world was made of? In What’s the Matter, children will have the opportunity to explore the science of matter. Topics explored will include states of matter, density, and chemical reactions. Each topic will have a hands-on experiment, including science burritos, elephant toothpaste, and ice cream! Frontier Days Grades K-6 European-American settlers first came to the San Juan Basin in 1875 to farm the fertile land with water from the Animas, La Plata, and San Juan Rivers. These early pioneers endured a harsh and isolated landscape to build an agricultural community. Participants in this program will experience many aspects of early pioneer life in Farmington, including food preparation, household chores, and toys and games. Art Quest Grades K-6 How have humans expressed themselves throughout history with art and what purpose has art served human societies? Incorporating the museum’s current art exhibits and hands-on art activities, children will explore the meaning of art, how different cultures have expressed their beliefs through art, and some of the techniques involved in creating artworks. Four Corners Cultures Grades K-8 The Puebloan and Navajo peoples settled in the Four Corners region and cultivated the land hundreds of years before European-American settlers arrived. As a volunteer with the City of Farmington you will have an opportunity to put your knowledge, talent, and energy toward improving the quality of life in our community. The Mayor’s Volunteer Program provides a broad source of expertise, talent, and manpower for City programs as well as an avenue for you to participate in your local Government. As an MVP, you will benefit by gaining a greater understanding and appreciation for how your City operates and be instrumental in strengthening our community’s bond. Volunteering is Rewarding By volunteering, you are offering your skills and abilities to enhance the delivery of the City’s services to the community. Volunteers are partners in building a community you can be proud of, through an experience that brings fulfillment. Volunteer Opportunities are Varied There are volunteer opportunities to work alongside City staff in some of the City offices; however, if you are interested in doing something that is not on our list of available opportunities, we will work with you to see if it is possible to build that opportunity within the framework of our volunteer program. Citizen Involvement Programs: Residents can volunteer to help guide the City of Farmington by serving on a board, commission, or committee each with specific responsibilities. Boards, commissions, and committees study information in specific areas and make recommendations to the mayor and city council on issues within that board’s area of expertise. Citizens can also volunteer for special City programs including the Citizen Insight Academy and the Citizen Police Academy. Special Events: Volunteers are utilized for special events or projects hosted by the City, sometimes for a single-day event - perhaps even for just a few hours. Groups often sign up to volunteer for this type of event. These events will be listed as they arise throughout the year. Short-Term Projects: A City department might request volunteers to work with a short-term project. These opportunities will be posted as they become available. Long-Term and Ongoing Opportunities: Various departments within the City request volunteer help for long- term projects or for ongoing assignments within the department that can be filled by an individual volunteer on a regular basis. These opportunities will be posted along with a volunteer service description of the position. Go to www.fmtn.org and select the volunteer button on the right. It’s easy to sign up - just click on the application or special event button at the bottom of the screen.
