Toddler Playdate Wednesdays • 10am-12pm Playdates are designed for families with young children to develop early motor skills and find new playmates. Visit our Tot’s Turf or just join us in a fun and engaging activity. Activities are offered each week to encourage children’s imaginations and exploration of the world around them. Then you best get yourselves to E3 for some spacey family fun. We will watch a pre-recorded NASA video on Orion’s first flight. Why pre-recorded? Well, the actual flight hap- pens around 2am our time, so we will record it and you can all sleep in. There will be a ton of activities for all ages and lots of NASA givea- ways (while supplies last). How much is this fabulous event? It is FREE, but we would be glad to take donations. Spend part or all of the day with other birders counting all the birds, common or rare, abundant or scarce, in their wintering grounds here. The statistics are used nationwide to follow changes and trends in bird popula- tions. The area of Berg and Animas Parks has been included for over 30 years. Groups will be walking the parks, and others will be observing feeders. Beginners and experienced birders are all able to help. To take part, call (505)599-1422. Chaco Canyon Christmas Bird Count Monday • December 22 • 9am-3pm Join volunteers from the Four Corners Bird Club and the Nature Center in making a winter census of the birds at Chaco Canyon National Monument. Participants should be experienced birders and able to hike in backcountry areas in winter weather. Ride sharing can be arranged. For more information, call the Nature Center, 599-1422. The Nature Center will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Moonlight Walk Saturday • January 3 • 7pm-8:30pm Animas Park is beautiful in winter, with many birds and animals to see. Come for a walk along the river and the woodland trails to see wildlife and the beauty of the winter gardens. Dress for the weather, and bring binoculars if you have them. Making Tracks Saturday • January 10 • 1pm-3pm Take a walk through Animas Park looking for tracks and traces of the animals who live here. If weather permits, make a plaster cast of a track to take home. Nature Center staff and volunteers will help everyone learn more about the wildlife of the park. Friends of the Nature Center Annual Meeting at the Farmington Museum Friday • January 23 • 6pm–8pm All members and others interested are invited for a simple supper, elections of board members, and news about the Nature Center activities and plans, as well as an opportunity to see the exhibits at the Farmington Museum. Please RSVP by January 22. Tuesday Birders Tuesdays • 9am-11am Join a group of beginning and expe- rienced birders for a walk every Tues- day, and follow the changing sea- sons. Over 150 species of birds have been seen in Animas and Berg Parks, and this is your chance to see some of them. Bring your binoculars and bird book, or borrow some at the Nature Center. Come early for cof- fee and to observe birds at the feeders before the walk be- gins. Brown Bag Birding Thursdays • 12pm-1pm Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat over- looking the wetlands. Anyone needing handicapped ac- cess may drive to the parking area right outside the building. What are your favorite pictures taken in Animas and Berg Park? Choose up to five of your best pictures of scenery, people, wildlife, and activities in the river parks, and plan to print and mount them for our annual March photo show. Pictures are accepted during the month of February, for exhibit in March and early April. Photographers of all ages are invited to take part in this show. Moonlight Walk Saturday • December 6 • 7pm – 8:30pm See Animas Park by the light of the full moon on this easy walk of about two miles. We will look for nocturnal wildlife, and see the All Veterans Memorial. Dress warmly, and bring a flashlight, but we hope the moon will be all the illumination we need. The evening will be even more beautiful if there is snow on the ground. No pets, please. Simple Bird Feeders Saturday • December 13 • 1pm -3pm Learn about feeding birds and make tree ornaments which birds can eat, to decorate a tree at the nature center or to take home. Find out what birds eat and how to attract them, and learn the common winter birds in this area. Watch and learn the birds outside the Nature Center as you work. This is a family activity for all ages. Family Astronomy Night January 24 • 5pm – 8pm Celebrate the winter skies and learn about our universe at the Farmington Museum's 2nd Annual Family Astronomy Night on Sat- urday, January 24 from 5pm to 8pm. There will be star legends featured in the Stardome planetarium and a chance to observe the night sky through a telescope on the terrace, weather permit- ting. Join us for many fun craft and activity stations set up throughout the Museum, such as Spectroscopes, Survival in a Vacuum-Peeps in Peril!, What is a Serving Size-Space Food?, Pop Rockets, measuring hand strength with our Vernier Probes, and much, much more! Farmington Museum Exhibit Tours By appointment Let an experienced docent at the Farmington Museum be your host for guided tours of the permanent and visiting exhibits. Tours are FREE and available to the public by appointment. Any size group is welcome! Holiday Papercrafting Workshops for Adults December 1-5 • 6pm – 8:30pm Handmade paper crafts are an inexpensive and creative way to make beautiful gifts and decorations for the holidays! Workshops are $7 and all supplies will be provided. Space is limited. Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science Exhibit Dates: September 27 – April 26 Unearth the secrets of an ancient Egyptian world in an interac- tive exhibition at the Farmington Museum featuring the hidden stories and artifacts of a lost civilization. See a real human mum- my, animal mummies, plus scans, forensic facial reconstructions, and for the first time ever, a life-size rapid prototype of a human mummy. Interpret ancient Egyptian art, decipher and examine material remains using the tools and technology of archaeologists to unearth the mysteries of Egypt, its history, cul- ture, and people. Lost Egypt was produced by COSI in coopera- tion with the Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative, and was built by the Science Museum of Minnesota.
