The geographic analysis of results only includes responses from the invitation survey, and not those from the open link, as addresses were tracked exclusively among members of the random sample. As with the overall results provided in the final report, the underlying data for responses were weighted by age to ensure appropriate representation of the City of Farmington residents. The geographic analysis produced the following observations: • Respondent vs. City Profile. The respondent profiles for each quadrant of the city largely mirror demographic trends in each of those areas. The sample sizes for each quadrant are roughly proportional to the percent of the Farmington population that reside in each area. Northeast: 40 percent of the sample, 41 percent of the city’s population; Northwest: 38 percent of the sample, 34 percent of the city’s population; Southeast: 15 percent of the sample, 19 percent of the city’s population; Southwest: 7 percent of the sample, 6 percent of the city’s population. It should be noted that small sample sizes can contribute to volatility in the results. Therefore, responses from the Southeast (n=37) and Southwest (n=18) quadrants should be interpreted with some caution. • Satisfaction with Current PRCA Recreational Amenities and Services. Respondents were asked to rate their satisfaction with a variety of PRCA recreational amenities and services using of 5-point scale where 1 means “Not At All Satisfied” and 5 means “Completely Satisfied.” Relative to “proximity of amenities to my home,” respondents in the Southwest quadrant gave the highest average satisfaction rating followed by the Southeast and Northwest quadrants (4.3, respectively), and the Northeast quadrant • Current Outdoor and Indoor Services and Facilities. Response patterns also differed by quadrant in relation to whether outdoor and indoor amenities were meeting the needs of the household. o Overall, residents of the Southwest quadrant of the city gave high average ratings across the board, suggesting that these residents have a high level of needs being met. The only area which received relatively lower ratings was in regards to lake recreation (average rating of 3.0). o Northeast respondents gave lower average ratings (an indication of needs not being met) for the following: outdoor pools gym Farmington Indian Center courts dog parks lake recreation access to river camping and RV camping o Northwest respondents gave relatively lower average rating for: skate parks mountain bike trails courts Farmington Indian Center and RV camping ---PAGE BREAK--- FARMINGTON PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS SURVEY 2014 o Overall, residents of the Southeast area reported more areas in which they had lower levels of needs being met. Southeast respondents provided lower average ratings for: access to river Indoor pools and aquatic center amphitheater gym senior center golf courses lake recreation courts dog parks outdoor pools Farmington Indian Center field sports camping mountain bike trails tennis skate parks jeep trails and RV camping Again, smaller sample sizes (n between 7 and 33) should be taken into consideration. • Relative to the most important outdoor and indoor amenities to add, expand, or improve, responses also tended to differ by quadrant of residence. o Northeast respondents were most interested in the Civic Center, with 23 percent of respondents indicating it as the first, second, or third most important priority. This was closely followed by the library (22 percent) and the riverfront area (21 percent). o Northwest respondents were most interested in open space (24 percent), closely followed by indoor pools and aquatic center (22 percent), picnic areas (22 percent), unpaved trails (21 percent), library (21 percent), and the Civic Center (21 percent). o Southeast residents most prioritized unpaved trails (36 percent), followed by the indoor pools and aquatic center (29 percent), and dog parks (23 percent). o Southwest respondents were most concerned with the library (48 percent), followed by unpaved trails (32 percent), and indoor pools and aquatic center (31 percent). • Programs, Activities, and Special Events. Respondents indicated if their household had a need for various programs, activities, and special events. If they stated a need, they were instructed to report how well their needs are being met by the PRCA. All respondents indicated a need for special events, with relatively low levels of needs being met in the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast quadrants. However, other needs differed somewhat by area of residence: o Northeast respondents indicated the greatest need for special events (83 percent). Currently, their needs are being met an average of 54 percent. o Northwest respondents also indicated the greatest need for special events (88 percent). Currently their needs are being met an average of 49 percent. They also expressed relatively high need for walking/running programs (71 percent), for which their needs are 51 percent met, on average. o Southeast respondents indicated the greatest need for swimming programs (67 percent; 48 percent needs met), closely followed by special events (65 percent; 50 percent needs met), health and wellness programs (65 percent; 49 percent needs met), and fitness programs (64 percent; 46 percent needs met). o Southwest respondents had the highest needs for special events (80 percent), but gave a high average rating of their needs being met (77 percent). ---PAGE BREAK--- FARMINGTON PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS SURVEY 2014 • Future Facilities, Amenities, and Services. One set of questions instructed respondents to indicate whether their households would use various amenities and the importance of adding, repurposing, expanding or improving these amenities over the next 5 to 10 years. Among all respondents, regardless of area of residence, river trails had a high rate of participation and high average ratings for expansion or improvement. However, responses for the other options varied by area of residence: o Northeast respondents indicated the highest levels of participation for river trails (49 percent), riverfront park (48 percent), and Lions Wilderness Park (45 percent). These options were closely followed by a mini golf course (44 percent), new water park (44 percent), connectors paths and trails (43 percent), playgrounds (42 percent), and Farmington Lake (42 percent). Relative to most important for adding, expanding or improving, Northeast respondents gave the highest average ratings for river trails expansion renovated E3 Children’s Museum and playgrounds (3.8) o Northwest respondents were by far most interested in river trails (62 percent), followed by Civic Center (53 percent), a mini golf course (51 percent), and riverfront park (49 percent). Their top-rated facilities for expansions or improvements consisted of river trails expansion riverfront park and amenities upgrade and mini golf course (3.9) o Southeast respondents were also most likely to participate in river trails (54 percent), followed by connector paths and trails (46 percent), riverfront park (45 percent), existing but renovated recreation center (45 percent), and mini golf course (43 percent). They cited Farmington Lake (4.0) as the most important to add, expand, or improve. In a second tier of responses, they gave the following high average ratings of importance: river trails expansion, outdoor leisure pool, connector paths and trails, and indoor therapeutic pool (3.8, respectively). o Meanwhile, Southwest respondents were most likely to participate in river trails (86 percent) and connector paths and trails (76 percent). The most highly rated facilities for improvement include connector paths and trails (3.8) and New Children’s Museum • Top 3 Priorities During the Next 5 to 10 Years. In response to the question about the top three priorities for PRCA over the next 5 to 10 years, respondents provided different answers depending on their area of residence. o Across all quadrants, maintaining and improving existing facilities was cited as one of the top three most important priorities by the largest share of respondents. In other words, by combining the top three priority choices, this option was deemed most important across-the-board. However, Southwest (75 percent) and Southeast (71 percent) residents felt most strongly about the maintenance and improvement of existing facilities. ---PAGE BREAK--- FARMINGTON PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS SURVEY 2014 o Southwest respondents were more supportive of trails and connectivity (64 percent choosing it as one of the top three priorities) than those from other quadrants. o Improve quality of life and attract tourism was a more popular choice among residents from the Northeast and Northwest (41 and 45 percent, respectively). Respondents from these areas were also more invested in increasing programming for family, youth and teens (38 and 39 percent, respectively). Figure 1 Q3.
