The art of making modern piñatas falls under the Mexican craft heading of "cartonería", which refers to the making of items from paper and cardboard. Come in and make your own creation. May 17 Honeybees and Lady birds Learn about New Mexico’s pollinators and beneficial insects through art with NMSU Master Gardener Sarah Teofanov. All ages Welcome. The proceeds raised by this benefit auction help support the programs, exhibits, and collections for the museum. Mosaic Madness! April 11 • 1pm – 4pm April 18 • 1pm – 4pm April 25 • 1pm – 4pm Kids 8 years and older will enjoy this weekly class dedicated to the ancient art of mosaics at the Farmington Museum. Each class will feature a different mosaic project made with a variety of objects, from tiles and marbles, to seashells and glass. Attend one or all! Each class is $3 and space is limited. Schedule of Events May 2014 April and Farmington Museum System ---PAGE BREAK--- In Animas Park off Browning Parkway • [PHONE REDACTED] Settlement to City NOW – April 26, 2014 You’ll be engulfed in this expansive, historic, and contemporary photography exhibit of Farmington’s dramatic transition over the years. Experience a slice of Farmington's past in comparison to what it is today. This unique ex- hibit uses both photography and historic objects to show the evolution of Farmington from small agricultural settlement to the bustling city of today. History Hike – The Narrows May 10 • 8am – 5pm History Hikes are back at the Farmington Museum! Join us on the second Saturday of the month, May through September, for a fun and informative hike that explores the cultural and natural history of the Four Corners region. In May, participants will have the opportunity to explore the vast la- va flows of El Malpais National Monument and La Ventana Arch, the second-largest stone arch in New Mexico. Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by calling 599-1174 or by coming into the museum. The cost is $15 per person and includes transportation and lunch. This is an adults-only program. Farmington Museum Full Moon Hike – Bisti Badlands May 14 • 7pm – 11pm Explore hoodoos under the moonlight and listen to some star stories in the Bisti Badlands this spring! Join the Farmington Museum for a Full Flower Moon hike to the Bisti’s cracked eggs on Wednesday, May 14. Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by coming into the museum or calling (505) 599-1174. The cost is $5 per person and includes transportation. This is an adults-only program. Please dress warmly and bring water. Historic Downtown Farmington Walking Tour May 16 • 6pm – 8pm Join the Farmington Museum for a walking tour of downtown Farmington’s fascinating early history. Learn a little about the devastating Main St. fires, early architecture, pioneer community builders, and more! This program is FREE and available to all ages. Transportation will be provided. Gateway to Imagination: A National Juried Art Competition May 10 – July 12 • Exhibit Dates May 17, 6-7pm • Opening Reception Presentation May 17, 7-9pm • Opening Reception Join the Farmington Museum at the opening of our national juried art show, Gateway to Imagination. This annual show attracts fine artists from across the country and will feature around 100 pieces of art, including paintings, watercolors, sculptures, photographs, and mixed media. A presentation by the art show juror will be offered for FREE prior to the opening reception. Farmington Museum Exhibit Tours By appointment Let an experienced docent at the Farmington Museum be your host for guided tours of the permanent and visiting exhibits. Tours are FREE and available to the public by appointment. Any size group is welcome! Brown Bag Birding Thursdays • 12pm-1pm Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat. Picnic in the Park for Preschoolers Tuesdays • Beginning April 1, 11am-12:30pm Preschool children and their families bring lunch and meet at the Nature Center for a picnic, followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks, and go home in time for naps. This program continues every week throughout the spring and summer. Photo Show at Nature Center March 1 – April 18 The annual photo show, featuring the work of many photographers, will be on exhibit beginning March 1. Science Fair Winners at the Nature Center Science Fair projects selected by a committee of judges from the Friends of the Nature Center will be on display at the Nature Center April 19 through May. Be sure to come in and see what kind of research students are doing. Memberships in the Friends are awarded to winning students and their sponsors, as well as cash awards to science fair winners in fields related to natural history and the environment. Compass Games Saturday • April 5 • 10am -12pm Learn to use a compass to follow a trail, or lay out a trail for someone else, by playing games and having fun in the park. Compasses are provided for this outdoor activity. This activity is for adults and children fourth grade and older. Moonlight Walk Saturday • April 12 • 7pm– 8:30pm Come enjoy the park by moonlight, on a walk of about two miles. We hope to see wildlife, and will take time to enjoy the lighted All Veterans Memorial. Dress from head to toe for the cold night weather. All ages are welcome, but children should be old enough to under- stand walking quietly. No pets, please. Dutch Oven Baking Saturday • May 3 • 9am to 11am outside Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main St. For a real treat during your summer camping or backyard cooking, try baking in a cast-iron dutch oven. If this is a new type of cooking for you, come to a demonstration, and get some hands-on experience, recipes, and tips from an expert. Donna Thatcher will be demonstrating several recipes from start to tasting during a two-hour outdoor session. Space is limited, so please call and pre-register. Bring a lawn chair, and dress to spend the time outdoors around the fire in sun and breezes as we revive this pioneer skill. Register at 599-1422. Spring Migratory Bird Count Saturday • May 10 • 8am-2pm Join an international project to learn where migratory birds are spending the spring nesting season, by observing and counting the birds in Animas and Berg Parks. Beginning and expert observers are all welcome as we walk the park trails and bridges. Herbs & Xeriscape Garden Saturday • May 24 • 10am-11am and 3pm -4pm Learn about the many native and non-native plants which grow with very little water, are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, and have many household uses. Learn traditional lore, and tasty recipes. This is a good time to get ideas for your own home landscaping as we tour the Xeriscape Demonstration Gardens. Note: Nature Center Hours change April 1 to our summer schedule – We are open 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sundays Bird Watching Tuesdays • 8am-10am Join Donna Thatcher, Education Specialist with the Farmington Museum, and other birders for bird watching from the Nature Center and a leisurely walk of 1 to 2 miles in Animas and Berg Parks.
