Toddler Playdate Wednesdays • 10am-12pm Playdates are designed for families with young children to develop early motor skills and find new playmates. May the 4th be with you! Invited you are to our second ever Star Wars Day!!!! Lots of fun activities for all ages we have, so get your Jedis where the force is unusually strong you shall. This is a FREE family event. Use your comm link and dial 599-1425 with questions. If you choose wear your costumes (this blurb was done by an amateur Star Wars nerd…please be kind) Deconstruct Zone! Saturday ● May 28 ● 11am-1pm Caution! Deconstruct Zone! Enter with care. Come by for some interesting deconstructing of household stuff. Ever wonder what is on the inside of Grandma's VCR? How about Auntie's coffee pot? If you answered yes to these questions, you need to stop by and take apart some interesting small appliances to see what exactly makes them tick. This is a free family event and suitable for ages 7 and up. Bird Watching Tuesdays ● 8am-10am Join Donna Thatcher, Education Specialist with the Riverside Nature Center, and other birders for bird watching from the Nature Center and a leisurely walk of 1 to 2 miles in Animas and Berg Parks. Brown Bag Birding Wednesdays ● 12pm-1pm Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat. Picnic in the Park for Preschoolers Tuesdays ● 11am-12:30pm Preschool children and their families bring a lunch and meet at the Nature Center for a picnic, followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks and be home in time for naps. This program continues weekly throughout the spring and summer. Photo Show at Nature Center March 1 – April 16 The annual photo show, featuring the work of many photographers, will be on exhibit beginning March 1. Science Fair Winners at the Nature Center April 21-May Science Fair projects selected by a committee of judges from the Friends of the Nature Center will be on display. Be sure to come in and see what kind of research students are doing. Dutch Oven Baking Saturday ● May 21 ● 9am-11am At the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main St. For a real treat during your summer camping or backyard cooking, try baking in a cast-iron dutch oven. If this is a new type of cooking for you, come to a demonstration, and get some hands-on experience, recipes, and tips from an expert. Donna Thatcher will be demonstrating several recipes from start to tasting during a two-hour outdoor session. Space is limited, so please call and pre-register. Each person should bring $2.00 to help pay for ingredients. Bring a lawn chair, and dress to spend the time outdoors around the fire in sun and breezes as we revive this pioneer skill. Herbs & Xeriscape Garden Friday ● May 27 ● 10am–11am and 3pm–4pm Saturday ● May 28 ● 2pm–3pm Learn about the many native and non-native plants which grow with very little water, are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, and have many household uses. Learn traditional lore, and tasty recipes. This is a good time to get ideas for your own home landscaping as we tour the Xeriscape Demonstration Gardens. Nature Center Continued….. Stars and Stories Saturday ● April 9 ● 8pm-9:30pm Walk about two miles by starlight in Animas and Berg Parks to learn constellations and their stories. Look and listen for nocturnal wildlife along the way. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. Children should be old enough to understand walking quietly. No pets, please. Earth Day Celebration Saturday ● April 23 ● 11am-3pm Create art from recycled materials, learn about curbside recycling, take a guided trail walk, learn about the xeriscape garden, and try other activities with staff and volunteers from our Parks Department. Compass Games Saturday ● April 30 ● 10am-12pm Learn to use a compass to follow a trail, or lay out a trail for someone else, by playing games and having fun in the park. Compasses are provided for this outdoor activity. This activity is for adults and children fourth grade and older. Spring Migratory Bird Count Saturday ● May 7 ● 8am-3pm Join an international project to learn where migratory birds are spending the spring nesting season, by observing and counting the birds in 5 years and older will have to opportunity to explore some of the fascinating cultural and natural history of the Four Corners on short day hikes. The cost is $5 per family and transportation is provided. Space is limited and registration is required. Stories in the Sky Constellation Walk May 6 ● 11:30pm-1am ● Piñon Mesa Fee: $5/person Join the Farmington Museum throughout the year for constellation walks. Each walk will feature astronomy stories from a variety of cultures, including Greek and Navajo, depending on the time of the year. Space is limited. Registration is required. Transportation is included. This is an adults-only program. Please dress warmly and bring a flashlight if you have one. Gateway to Imagination: A National Juried Art Competition May 7 – July 9 May 7 ● 6pm-7pm ● Opening Reception Juror Presentation May 7 ● 7pm-9pm ● Opening Reception Join the Farmington Museum at the opening of our national juried art show, Gateway to Imagination. This annual show attracts fine artists from across the country and will feature approximately 100 entries, including paintings, watercolors, sculptures, photographs, and mixed media. This year’s juror will give a FREE presentation prior to the public reception. History Hikes May 14 ● 8am-6pm ● Bisti Badlands Fee: $15 ($12 FMF Members) History Hikes are back at the Farmington Museum! Join us on the second Saturday of the month, May through September, for a fun and informative hike that explores the cultural and natural history of the Four Corners region. In May, participants will have the opportunity to explore the strange hoodoos and other fascinating geological oddities of the Bisti Badlands, including the Egg Garden. Space is limited and registration is required. This program is for adults 18 years and older. The cost is $15 per person ($12 Farmington Museum Foundation members) and includes transportation and lunch. Join the Farmington Museum for a hike in the Bisti Badlands during the full moon and find out! Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by registering online at fmtn.org/ museums under the quick links tab on the right, or by coming into the museum. This is an adults-only program. Please dress warmly and bring a flashlight if you have one. What Is It Worth? – Southwest Textiles Appraisal & A Brief History of Navajo Weaving April 2 ● What Is It Worth? ● 12pm-3pm A Brief History of Navajo Weaving ● 3pm-4:30pm Do you have a Navajo rug or other Southwest textile hanging around the house? Ever wonder what it was, where it came from, or how much it may be worth? Well, stop by the Farmington Museum for an ‘Antiques Roadshow’-type event. Mark Winter, owner of the Toadlena Trading Post, will be present to unofficially appraise any Southwest textiles you have! There is a fee of $5 and a limit of two items per person. Directly following the event, Mark Winter will present a brief history of Navajo weaving in honor of the museum’s exhibit Diyogi: A Collection of Early Navajo Wearing Blankets, c. 1870-1900. On Saturdays throughout the year, participants will have the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Four Corners on an all-day field trip. On April 9th, participants will have the opportunity to attend a tour and discover some of the six prehistoric villages built between A.D. 1200 and 1300. On April 30th, participants can experience military drills, camp life, lectures, demonstrations and reenactments of Civil War battles fought in New Mexico at El Rancho de las Golondrinas. This is an adults-only program and registration is required. Transportation will be provided. The proceeds raised by this benefit auction help support the programs, exhibits, and collections for the museum. Historic Downtown Farmington Walking Tours April 21 ● 5:30pm-7pm Join the Farmington Museum for a FREE walking tour of downtown Farmington’s fascinating early history. Learn a little about the devastating Main St. fires, early architecture, pioneer community builders, and more!
