OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH THE SENIOR CENTER PROMOTES THE “GET PINKED” PROGRAM Breast cancer has not age limit. It can happen even in your later years. Awareness and prevention can save your life. Prevention entails self-exams and annual mammograms. Awareness is noticing changes and talking to your Doctor, when you become AWARE that you might have a problem. We tend to want to deny that something is wrong and can do more harm by not going in immediately and getting checked. Studies show that women can reduce their chance of developing breast cancer by two thirds with good nutritional choices as well. Here is a list of a few of the top cancer preventing foods to incorporate into your meals.  Salmon: Eating 8 ounces of oily fish a week such as salmon, tuna, and sardines can reduce the risk of ductal carcinoma. It is thought that the healthy Omega 3 fats reduce inflammation which is a contributing factor to breast cancer.  Olive Oil: Cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and olive oil is the least acidic of all oils making it a perfect addition to any cancer preventing meal plan.  Broccoli: While all cruciferous vegetables are known for their cancer fighting properties, broccoli contains the highest levels of sulforaphane.  Sulforaphane is known for its anticancer properties and is most abundant in raw or steamed broccoli. Boiling or overcooking removes all cancer fighting abilities.  Parsley: Recent studies show that herbs and spices do more than just flavor food; they provide medicinal benefits to the body. Parsley is a perfect example of the healing powers of herbs. The compound apigenin contained in a pinch of parsley provides an immune system boost which aids the body in fighting the development of cancerous tumors. Add two tablespoons to soups, salads, and stews for the body to obtain the most benefit. Scientific studies determine that about one fourth of breast cancer cases are genetic, but some lifestyle choices can help prevent breast cancer. Combine healthy nutritional food choices with daily exercise and the probability of breast cancer developing can be reduced significantly. Please support our “Get Pinked Campaign” by buying a pink ribbon for the wall in the Fitness Center or making a donation to our fundraising event. See Carol Gutierrez or Omega Soto for details on how to help.
