This conservation focused program is sponsored by the New Mexico BioPark Society and is offered free of charge to requesting schools and organizations. This program travels throughout New Mexico on a year-round basis, and is pleased to be visiting our community. Toddler Playdate Wednesday • 10am-12pm Playdates are designed for families with young children to develop early motor skills and find new playmates. Visit our Tot’s Turf or just join us in a fun and engaging activity. Activities are offered each week to encourage children’s imaginations and exploration of the world around them. Schedule of Events September August and Farmington Museum System Picnic in the Park Tuesdays • 11am-12:30pm Families with toddlers and pre-school children are invited to come This program is tailored for young children and their parents, with stroller-friendly walks, activities using all our senses, and, of course, feeding the ducks. Just bring your lunch to eat inside or out, depending on the weather, followed by a short walk or activity. Activities will be over by 12:30, in time for afternoon naps. Come enjoy the outdoors with your little ones this summer. Tuesday Birders Tuesdays • 8am-10am Join a group of beginning and experienced birders for a walk every Tuesday, and follow the changing seasons. Over 150 species of birds have been seen in Animas and Berg Parks, and this is your chance to see some of them. Bring your binoculars and bird book, or borrow some at the Nature Center. Come early for coffee and to observe birds at the feeders before the walk begins. Brown Bag Birding Thursdays 12:00-1:00 pm Bring your lunch and join Nature Center staff and volunteers in the observation room to watch wildlife as we eat overlooking the wetlands. Anyone needing handicapped access may drive to the parking area right outside the building. Plants of Many Uses June 10 – September 20 Local plants were, and are, used in many ways for food, household items, and art. Visit this exhibit, which will change throughout the summer to learn about the many uses of our local plants. Some of these uses will be featured in Saturday activity programs and walks, also. Poetry Picnic Friday • August 8 • 6pm Bring a picnic to eat in the garden. Afterwards, enjoy reading and listing to poetry for a short time. The theme is “Baseball & Sports.” The park is open until sunset for walking and enjoying the woodlands and riverside. Split-Willow Animals Saturday • August 9 • 1pm-3pm Small animals made by folding and wrapping split willow wands have been found in archaeological sites thousands of years old. Try your hand at this ancient craft, using willow cuttings from Animas Park, and take home your own creation. Some patience is required at first, so this is recommended for people 10 and older. Garden Celebration and Herb Festival Saturday • August 16 • 8am-11am Begin your morning with early coffee and light refreshments in the Nature Center as we watch the wildlife at the wetlands. Then come to the Xeriscape garden for tours of the herb and traditional knowledge gardens. There will be recipes and information for growing your own beautiful and useful plants. The Friends of the Nature Center sponsor this celebration. Poetry Picnic Friday • August 22 • 6pm at the Farmington Public Library The Library is co-sponsoring this final Poetry Picnic of the summer, and box lunches and drinks will be provided. Come and learn about local poets, and bring some poetry of your own to share if you wish. Please pre-register so enough picnic food can be ordered. We will catch a few for up-close study, as well as watch them in their river and wetlands habitat. Binoculars are helpful, so bring them if possible. The early walk may be a little more technical, for adults, and the lat- er walk will be especially designed for children and their families. Traditional Knowledge of Plants Saturday • September 13 • 9am-12pm Find out how traditional peoples used plants for dyes, foods, household items, and many other things. This workshop includes a walk of about a mile to see plants in the park, and some hands-on activities to try some samples. Please call in advance to sign up, as space is limited. Beneficial Bugs Saturday • September 20 • 10am–12pm Learn about New Mexico’s pollinators and beneficial insects through art with NMSU Master Gardeners Sarah Teofanov and Kandy Lemoine. Concepts, activities, and handouts are for all ages. Stars and Stories Saturday • September 20 • 7:30–9pm This evening walk is an opportunity to learn stars, constellations, and the which help remember them on a stroll through Animas Park. Dress for the weath- er, and bring a flashlight. Binoculars are helpful. Children should be old enough to understand listening quietly. No pets, please. History Hike – Bridal Veil Falls & Blue Lake Saturday • August 9 • 8am–6pm In August, participants will have the opportunity to explore the tallest free-falling waterfall in Colorado and the gorgeous Telluride Valley. Space is limited. Registration is required and can be completed by calling (505) 599-1169 or by coming into the museum. The cost is $15 per person and includes transportation and lunch. This is an adults-only program. Totah Festival Navajo Rug Auction Rug Preview • August 30 • 9am-12pm Rug Auction • August 30 • 1pm The Totah Foundation will host the 26th Annual Totah Festival at the Farmington Civic Center. Totah Festival is a juried art festival featuring Native American art from across the Southwest. The Festival began in 1988 as a marketplace for Native American artists to share their skills and craftsmanship with the community, visitors, and each other. Today the Totah Festivalfeatures 100 artist booths, a juried art competition, contest Pow-Wow, and an authentic Navajo Rug Auction managed by the Farmington Museum. Historic Downtown Farmington Walking Tour September 2 • 5:30pm–7pm Join the Farmington Museum for a walking tour of downtown Farmington’s fascinating early history. Learn a little about the devastating Main St. fires, early architecture, pioneer community builders, and more! This program is FREE and available to all ages. Transportation will be provided. Pieced Together: Exploring America’s History through Quilts Tuesday • September 9 First Session: 10am – 11am Second Session: 6:30pm – 7:30pm Join the Farmington Museum and the San Juan Quilters’ Guild for the history of the Civil War and Depression as told by quilts. Jeananne Wright, an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser, will be giving two public presentations. The first, Gather up the Fragments: Civ- il War Quilts, will explore how quilts and the Civil War are interwoven. This trunk show features quilts from the years 1840-1870. The second, Uncommon Quilts from Common Threads: Feedsack Quilts and More, will take participants on a nostalgic journey through the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. REAL Night at the Museum Saturday • September 27 • 4pm – 7pm The Farmington Museum’s annual history extravaganza, REAL Night at the Museum is back! Join us for traditional favorite hands-on activities and crafts that bring the past alive. Apple pressing, butter churning, candle making, log cabin building, biscuit making over an open fire, and tractor rides will all be a part of this exciting event. Admission is free. Farmington Museum Docent Training – Lost Egypt Exhibit Saturday • September 20 • 11am–3pm Come explore Ancient Egypt and learn how to guide visitors through the Farmington Museum’s newest visit- ing exhibition: Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Lunch will be provided. Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science Exhibit Dates: September 27th – January 4th Members Only Preview: Call 599-1174 for more infor- mation Unearth the secrets of an ancient Egyptian world in an interactive exhibition at the Farmington Museum featuring the hidden stories and artifacts of a lost civilization. See a real human mummy, animal mummies, plus scans, forensic facial reconstructions, and for the first time ever, a life-size rapid prototype of a human mummy. Interpret ancient Egyptian art, decipher and examine material remains using the tools and technology of archaeologists to unearth the mysteries of Egypt, its history, culture, and people. Lost Egypt was produced by COSI in cooperation with the Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative, and was built by the Science Museum of Minnesota. The ground is bumpy and the nights are chilly, so be sure to bring a lawn chair, a jacket, and lots of snacks! The movies will be FREE, but donations are appreciated. Paint Like a Famous Artist Family Workshops Paint Like Giotto – Egg Paint Saturday • August 16 • 1pm–4pm Paint like Picasso! Mold like Michelangelo! Workshops will feature an art project in the style of a famous artist and are designed for families with children 8 years and older. Attend one, two, or three! Knocking It Out of the Park: Celebrating 50 Years of Connie Mack Exhibit Dates: July 26 – November 1 2014 marks the 50th year Farmington has hosted the Connie Mack World Series. It is not by chance or by accident that this tournament continues to be a success. It has been a team effort from the beginning. Since Farmington hosted its first tournament in 1965, the Connie Mack World Series has grown to be the largest and highest esteemed tournament in the realm of amateur baseball. The Farmington Museum is proud to present this exhibit honoring Farmington’s rich baseball heritage and the legacy of baseball in America.
