Farmington’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs March – April, 2014 Events Applications available for Miss Indian Farmington, 2014-2015 NOW - June 6 Come to the Farmington Indian Center, 100 W. Elm St., to get your Miss Indian Farmington application. Applications are due back to the Indian Center by Friday, June 6 2014. The Pageant will be held at the Farmington Civic Center on Friday, June 13, 2014, 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Eligibility requirements: Must be a resident of Farmington, between the ages of 12-18, and provide proof of Tribal enrollment. Info: (505) 327-6296 Settlement to City NOW – April, 2014 The Farmington Museum invites you to view an expansive display of historic and contemporary photography at this new exhibit. Farmington has changed dramatically over the years. Experience a slice of Farmington's past in comparison to what it is today. This unique exhibit uses both photography and historic objects to show the evolution of Farmington from small agricultural settlement to the bustling city of today. The Farmington Museum is located at 3041 E. Main St. in Farmington, NM. Call for Entries – 2014 Gateway to Imagination: A National Juried Art Competition NOW until March 15, 2014 Attention artists! Get your work prepared for entry into the 2014 Gateway to Imagination: A National Juried Art Competition. The show will take place at the Farmington Museum from May 10 - July 12, 2014. All media accepted, open to artists 18 years and older, artwork must have been completed after January 1, 2013. The show will award $2,750 in cash prizes. There is a $35 entry fee for a maximum of 2 digital files. The entry deadline is March 15, 2014 and the prospectus can be found online at www.farmingtonmuseum.org. Spring Fling Registration NOW – March 21 or filled Got nothing to do during Spring Break? Come join Farmington Aquatics and Farmington Recreation for some outdoor activities, swimming, and arts & crafts. Spring Fling runs March 24 - March 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost is $75.00 per child, 6 - 12 years of age. Starting February 28, you can register your child online, www.fmtn.org/recreation, at the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd., or at the Farmington Aquatic Center, 1151 N. This dance is free to the senior (50+) community of San Juan County and music begins at 6:30 p.m. Info: (505) 599-1390 Saturday Night Fun 5:30 – 10:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8 Hey kids ages 7-14!! Come to the Farmington Recreation Center, 1101 Fairgrounds Rd., for an evening full of fun activities! Dodgeball, basketball, wallyball, four square, music, movies, board games, good eats, and more is on the agenda! This is a great place to hang out with your friends! Event is planned and supervised by the Recreation Center staff, with entry sign-in and sign-out. The Recreation Center is closed to the public during this event. Don't miss the party! Annual March Photo Show March 4 – April 19 Visit the Riverside Nature Center, in Animas Park off Browning Parkway, Farmington, NM, for this annual exhibit of pictures taken in Animas and Berg Parks. Scenery, wildlife, events, still life, people, and pets are just some of the subjects in this display of works by many photographers, professional and amateur. Farmington Museum Annual Docent Training 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. March 8 New and current Farmington Museum docents are invited to a training session for the museum’s exhibits. This is an event especially for mothers and sons to build memories that will last a lifetime. Tickets are $4 per person and include dodgeball, ice cream, and a picture to cherish for years to come. Browning Parkway in Farmington, on Saturday, March 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Be one of the first 50 people to visit us, and get a coupon for $10 off of your adoption fee, good until March 31, 2014. Volunteer Recruitment Riverside Nature Center March 19 Riverside Nature Center needs more volunteer guides to connect visitors with the ecology and natural beauty of our river parks. If you can give time to help groups of children and others increase their knowledge of Farmington’s unique riverside landscape, attend this training at the Riverside Nature Center off the Browning Parkway in Animas Park from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Dress to walk the trails and learn about the Nature Trail program through entertaining activities and games. New guides begin leading groups by assisting experienced docents. Picnic in the Park for Preschoolers Tuesdays, April 1 – September 30 From 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., preschool children and their families bring lunch and meet at the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway, for a picnic, followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks, and go home in time for naps. This program continues every week throughout the spring and summer. Information: (505) 599-1422 Benefit Navajo Rug Auction & Preview April 4 - 5 The Farmington Museum Foundation is pleased to announce the Benefit Navajo Rug Auction to take place at the Farmington Museum at Gateway Park, 3041 E. Main St., on Saturday April 5th, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The proceeds raised by this benefit auction go to helping support the programs, exhibits, and collections for the soon-to-be-built new wing of the Farmington Museum. The public can preview nearly 200 rugs of all sizes, styles, and price ranges on Friday, April 4, Noon to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 5, Noon to 4:00 p.m. For more information call (505) 599-1180. Animal Welfare Celebration April 5 Come to Animas Park by the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter, 133 Browning Parkway, and celebrate the opening of the new shelter, with your families, and pets. Educational and entertaining activities will abound for the whole family. There will be something for everyone. Don’t miss this extravaganza! Proceeds will benefit the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter through the Regional Animal and Pet Shelter Foundation. Info: (505) 599-1098 ---PAGE BREAK--- Bark in the Park and Doggie Dash April 5 Join us at 9:30 a.m. for a Bark in the Park, Doggie Dash. Run, Romp or just play in Animal Park with your favorite canine friend before joining the Animal Welfare Celebration festivities. The Doggie Dash loop in the park is approximately 2 miles. Pre-registration for the event will be from March 17 through April 4 and guarantees you a shirt and your walking pal a doggie bandanna. Senior Olympics April 15 – May 16 The Bonnie Dallas Senior Center, 109 E. La Plata St., Farmington, NM, brings you the 2014 San Juan County Senior Olympics. $7.00 will enter you in the events, get you a great T-Shirt and be your pass for the awards picnic where we celebrate the winners and those who played. Tween Twilight Egg Hunt April 17 For ages 10-13, join the Recreation Center , 1101 Fairgrounds Rd., for our twilight egg hunt for tweens from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m.! All participants must be pre-registered by noon on Thursday, April 17. Participants need to bring their own flashlight for this event. The hunt will be held outside at the Fairgrounds Softball Field #2 (located next to the Recreation Center). Prizes of all sorts, including candy, movie passes, I-tunes cards, and more will be hidden in the eggs! After the hunt, stick around for games and snacks. Cost is $5.00. Easter April 18 Staff is busy filling eggs for the annual community Easter Egg Hunt to take place at Sycamore Park Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. The egg hunt will be at 10:00 a.m. sharp. Activities for this year’s event will include music, food vendors and games. There will be a dance contest hosted by Nolan Crowell at 11:00 a.m..
