EVERETT CODE ENFORCEMENT UNIT What is the Code Enforcement Unit’s responsibility? We help maintain or improve the quality of our community in the following ways: By enforcing laws and codes targeted to solve specific problems in Everett communities, including: Rubbish and nuisances Junk vehicles on private property Violation of land use conditions Substandard or dangerous buildings Building without permit Home Occupations Removal of vegetation Graffiti Occupied motor homes/trailers on private property By working with residents, neighborhood associations, public service agencies and other City of Everett departments to:  Facilitate voluntary compliance with City laws and codes  Empower neighborhoods to participate in keeping problem areas cleaned up  Develop ways to solve recurring problems and nuisances, involving representatives from all affected groups. What tools does the City use? Notice to Comply - This notice will include, the issue which the city finds in violation and steps which need to be taken to correct. Violation Citation - The violation citation may be issued to the property owner or to the tenants/occupants, or to both. The violation citation will describe the regulation that is being violated and the Corrective Action that needs to be taken. It will include a date for the completion of the required correction and a notice of when to appear before the City’s Violations Hearing Examiner. Hearing before the Violations Hearing Examiner. At the hearing, an Order will be issued by the Violations Hearing Examiner that sets a completion date for the corrective action. Costs, fines and other penalties may be assessed at this time. Penalties will typically be increased for Repeat Violators. Lien against the property if costs, penalties and costs of abatement are not paid. How can I use the system? If you are seeking relief from conditions on a property in your community, there are a number of options available to you: Make contact with the responsible person. Describe your perception of the problem. Discuss how the problem affects you and possible solutions. Attend your Neighborhood Association Meetings; get involved with solving the problems.
