Sanitation Operator I ES-SAN/3 Environmental Services - Sanitation JOB SUMMARY This position operates a truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste and for operating other equipment as assigned. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Sanitation Operator II” or “Sanitation Operator III”. MAJOR DUTIES  Operates an automated solid waste truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste.  Prepares list of customers who fail to place containers for pick-up.  Delivers solid waste containers to customers; repairs containers.  Operates a dump truck with snowplow and sander; operates snow blower.  Operates a front-end loader or backhoe to load sand for sand trucks.  Operates a tractor and mower to mow grass.  Operates street sweeper.  Operates a variety of hand and power tools.  Works at compost site; unloads yard waste; turns materials to make compost; loads and delivers compost to buyers.  Operates water truck.  Conducts vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure safety and operability; performs minor maintenance and repairs.  Resolve customer service complaints.  Performs related duties.  Responds to and participates in on call assignments and responsibilities. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION ---PAGE BREAK---  Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.  Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair principles.  Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.  Skill in providing customer services.  Skill in oral and written communication. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Sanitation Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include traffic laws, equipment operation guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK  The work consists of related equipment operation and other duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to operate equipment to collect solid waste and in support of other department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department functions. CONTACTS  Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public.  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT  The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.  The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves. ---PAGE BREAK--- SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.  Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.  Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
