A Safe, Modern Library for El Cerrito Community Update on Library Needs ---PAGE BREAK--- Background The City adopted a Strategic Plan for our future in 2013 Based on community input, the Library is a priority as a community focal point The City has held community meetings as part of a Library Needs Assessment study to further understand the community’s Library service priorities and needs. The Library does not meet the space, technological, educational, or safety needs of El Cerrito residents. ---PAGE BREAK--- What are the demands on our Library? The 67-year-old El Cerrito library was built in 1948, and does not currently meet earthquake safety standards. The current library is not energy-efficient. When school gets out, the Library is packed with school children, and simply too small for what our community needs. Library visits have increased 26% since 2006 alone and circulation is up about 28%. El Cerrito residents need a seismically-safe library that meets our community’s service needs, for years to come. ---PAGE BREAK--- How can the Library meet community needs? A safe, modern Library that meets the community’s educational and informational needs could provide:  Public access computers, a computer learning center, and free Wi-Fi A children’s area with space for story times Improved access for seniors and disabled residents Programs for children and teens, including homework help and reading resources, that are critical to providing our students with the resources they need. ---PAGE BREAK--- What’s the Solution? The City has been working with the community to evaluate El Cerrito’s Library service priorities and potential funding of a safe, modern Library.  A recently commissioned independent study shows that residents want an energy-efficient library that meets earthquake and fire codes, and includes updated wiring to accommodate computers and technology, among other service priorities that improve public access and programs for all residents. The City continues to solicit input from residents. ---PAGE BREAK--- How Do I Join the Conversation? Make sure to fill out our Community Feedback Form today to let us know your priorities for the El Cerrito Library. Do you belong to other organizations that need this information?
