Fill out and sign the attached Registration/Waiver form, one form per child. Additional copies available in the Harding School office, El Cerrito Community Center, or on-line at www.hardingpta.org. 2. Write one check for all HASEP course fees payable to “City of El Cerrito.” (Non-El Cerrito residents add 25%, as established by the City Council.) A $7.50 discount, per course, is given to students enrolled in our childcare* during HASEP. *Student must be attending childcare ON the day your child is attending the course. Information will be verified. 3. Materials fees must be paid by separate check directly to the HASEP course instructor. You may bring materials fees to the first day of class or drop them in the Materials Fees envelope in the Harding office. Failure to pay materials fees by the 3rd class will result in dismissal from class with no refund of the paid course fee. 4. Submit Registration/Waiver forms and payment of course fees directly to the El Cerrito Community Center at 7007 Moeser Lane, El Cerrito, 94530, (510) 559-7000 (M/W every other Fri., 8 AM-5 PM, T/TH 8 AM-6 PM). Classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration forms and course fees will not be accepted in the Harding School office. 5. For online registration or online registration instructions, go to www.el-cerrito.org/recreation. 6. Check-In: All Harding After School Childcare students must check-in with City Staff at the Harding Clubhouse. All other students (Non-Harding Childcare and Non-Harding Students) please check into the Multi-Purpose Room. City Staff or Class Instructors will escort students to their classrooms. Scholarships Available! The City of El Cerrito's David Hunter Youth Memorial Scholarship Fund is available to those families in need of financial assistance. This covers a maximum of 75% of course fees, not to exceed $150 per year per child. Applications are available at the El Cerrito Community Center or online at www.el-cerrito.org/recreation. In addition, funds from the Margaret Wolfe Honorary HASEP Scholarship are offered to Harding students through the Harding PTA. Applications are available in the Harding School office. Applicants must also apply to the David Hunter Youth Scholarship (above) prior to applying to the Margaret Wolfe Scholarship. Contact any HASEP committee member with questions. HASEP is administered by the El Cerrito Recreation Department in coordination with the HASEP committee. [EMAIL REDACTED]- cerrito.ca.us, (510) 559-7007. ---PAGE BREAK--- 3 HASEP 2013-2014 Session 2 MONDAY Zumba for Kids Instructor: Chelsea Martin Zumba is an exciting cardio blast dance party with all different styles of dance stemming from salsa to reggaeton to Indian and more. It's high energy, simple and fun dance moves combined with music from all around the world! And best yet, anyone can do it! Students should wear comfortable/athletic clothing and bring water! Start with Art Instructor: Lisa di Prima Start with a book then learn to look! After listening to a story young artists will look deep into their vivid imaginations to create original drawings, paintings, collages and clay sculptures. Musical Theater Workshop Instructor: Amber Martinez Musical Theater Workshop focuses on the performing arts, including dancing, singing, and acting on stage. Students will learn choreography and vocals from popular musicals – modern and classic. In this workshop there are no set principle roles, every student will be given the chance to sing and dance a principle role in every show. This class will expose students to musical theater in a comfortable and accepting environment. Musical Theater Workshop will challenge students in an unfamiliar art form while boosting their confidence, improving their stage presence and public speaking skills, all while giving them a healthy creative outlet and exercise! Students should wear comfortable athletic clothing and closed toe shoes. Fine Art Cartooning Instructor: Lisa di Prima Learn the basics of cartoon artistry while working 2 and 3 dimensionally. This class is perfect for students who love to draw, sculpt and make up funny stories. TUESDAY Shakespeare for Kids:”Henry V” Instructor: Mary Shakespeare for Kids This session we will study Shakespeare's historical play "Henry the true story of the young English king who led a band of farmers at the Battle of Agincourt and defeated the mighty French army. Children enjoy portraying the lords and ladies of the 15th-Century court, and they will read some of Shakespeare's most rousing speeches: "Once more unto the breech, dear friends!" The class is open to all students in 2-6th grades, regardless of reading level. It isn't necessary for a child to read well in order to love Shakespeare. Mary is a former reporter and editor for The Associated Press in New York City and in San Francisco. Secret Agent Lab Instructor: Mad Science Calling all agents, calling all agents! Step into the shoes of a detective, of a spy, of a sleuth to uncover the science involved in these professions. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to check out the skills that spies have in this hands-on journey into the world of espionage. Test your skills and learn how the pros do it through careful observation and techniques and build your own collection of Secret Agent tools by collecting all the take homes. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4 Academy of Future Instructor: Mad Science Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in the NASA Academy of Future Space Explorers After-School Program! The Academy of Future Space Explorers takes children on a voyage of discovery through the solar system and out into the stars! Students will investigate the life cycles of stars and planets, create galaxies out of bubbles and take home their own shimmering star constellation viewers. Make a model comet and learn about other space phenomenon we can spot in the night sky. Take a crash course on the technology of space travel and flight and explore how lasers help us navigate the great open outer space. Learn about rocket flight and how NASA gets people from our little planet all the way into outer space. Take home a model rocket that your child builds in class to launch at home! WEDNESDAY Jr. Lego Robotics & Sr. Lego Robotics Instructor: Peter Margolis These two level, co-located courses use robot building and computer programming to teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts within a team oriented problem/solution recreational setting. Through the use of the LEGO® Mindstorms NXT 2. 0 kit, NXT-G software, and laptop computers, the class experience is designed to be hands-on and lab research based. All equipment and supplies are provided for use. Although some participants may have had experience with general LEGO® kits, simple robot building and simple programming, we assume no prior experience. After introductory training, students will be able to program autonomous robot STEM lab tasks (challenges) and games. Spanish Instructor: Sarah Lainez Introduction to the Latin American culture. Dynamic and educational course taught by a Native Spanish speaking teacher. Students should bring a notebook, pencils and markers. THURSDAY Flamenco Instructor: Sara Ayala Students will learn the foundations of this dynamic art form of multicultural Southern Spain. Flamenco is known for its intricate percussive footwork and graceful arm and hand movements. Above all, students are encouraged to express inner pride and confidence! Students should wear any shoe with hard soles if you do not have character or flamenco shoes. Let’s Dance Instructor: Rinda Wardle This kindergarten only class for both boys and girls will introduce basic ballet vocabulary and technique in a structured and fun environment. A positive and energetic class format will strive to promote body awareness, healthful alignment, coordination, focus, musicality and Stretch shirts, stretch pants/shorts and bare feet. Chess Instructor: Berkeley Chess School Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily! Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others, patience, and good manners. And did we mention: it’s FUN!! ---PAGE BREAK--- 5 Guitar Instructor: Hassan El-Tayyab Learn to play guitar after school with experienced performer and music instructor Hassan El-Tayyab. He has taught music for privately for over 8 years to students of all ages. He has successfully worked with kids in El Cerrito for the past 2 years through MASEP and HASEP. Through the academic school years of 2007 to 2009, he ran the DASEP After School guitar program Brookline, MA. The class will cover learning new songs, chords, scales, proper technique, theory, and performance. Student must bring a guitar to class. FRIDAY Jedi Engineering with LEGO® Instructor: Play-Well TEKnologies The Force is strong in this class. Build complex machines and structures based on the best designs from a galaxy far, far away. Projects include X-Wings, AT-AT walkers, Pod Racers, Star Destroyers, Cloud Cities, settlements, and fortresses. Play-Well’s Jedi instructors reinforce key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics, eccentric motion and more as students tap into the powerful forces of imagination and engineering. Knit, Stitch, Weave Instructor: Annie Goodsill Learning to knit and sew is fun! Especially when you are in the company of friends. Credentialed art teacher and Artist, Annie Goodsill teaches students knitting and sewing skills that last a lifetime. Students can weave on small looms, sew a sock doll, participate in a group knit tag, and have the freedom to be themselves. KSW focuses on experimenting with all different colored yarns, thread, string, ribbons, and fabric. It is a fun and safe environment for your child to be creative. Chorus Instructor: Jody Seltzer Do you love to sing? Come sing songs you may know and new songs too. We will have a performance on the day of our last class where family and friends can enjoy our singing too. Students should bring a water bottle. Circus Arts Instructor: Circus Arts offers children the opportunity to learn a wide range of circus skills with an emphasis on juggling, unicycling, stilt walking, rolla bolla, hooping, and acrobatics. Students will also be introduced to theatrical expression, clowning, and creative movement. This is a great introductory circus skills experience for young people new to circus. The goal of our classes are for every child to be a winner. Learning a new circus skill builds self-esteem and confidence and improves balance, hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity, team building, and sharing. When a child expresses themselves through theater or performance it can have positive effects on the children's work and behavior in other areas. Depending on the age, ability, and interest of the children we also teach diablo, poi, parachute games, co- operative games, balloon modeling, face painting, performance skills, plate spinning, basic acro-balance, basic trapeze and aerial silks. Students should wear sneakers and comfortable clothing including shorts or pants. Sibling Discount! 1st Child-Regular Fee, 2nd Child-$5 Off, 3rd Child-$10 off. Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the program with no refund. ______Injury: I understand that participants in the City of El Cerrito programs do so at their own risk and the City does not provide accident insurance. ______Materials Fee: I understand that I am responsible for paying any materials fee by check directly to the instructor at the first class (or I may drop it in the Materials Fee envelope in the Harding School office). Failure to do so by the third class will result in dismissal of my child from the program with no refund. ______Photos: I understand that the City of El Cerrito Recreation Department and HASEP occasionally take photos of department programs and that the photos may include me or my child. I hereby authorize use of these photos for promotional or marketing purposes at the discretion of the City of El Cerrito and HASEP. ______Refunds: I understand that there are no refunds for activities sponsored by the City of El Cerrito unless a medical emergency occurs (with a doctor's note) or the activity is cancelled due to lack of enrollment. ______Returned checks: I understand that there is a $26 fee charged for returned checks. ______Rainy Day Policy for Outdoor Classes: I understand that, in the event of rain, outdoor classes will be cancelled. I will be prepared to pick up my child after the regular school dismissal time on such days (unless my child is enrolled in the Harding Childcare Program). Parents may call the El Cerrito Recreation Department ([PHONE REDACTED]) on the day of class to confirm whether their class will be cancelled due to rain. Credits for rained-out classes will be applied to your account. No make-up classes will be scheduled. ______Late Pick-up Fee: I understand that I am responsible for picking up my child at class dismissal (unless they are enrolled in the Harding Childcare Program) and that a late fee of $15 will be charged for every 15 minutes (or fraction thereof) that I am late. Any time there is a delay in picking up a child, he/she will be taken to the after-school childcare program located at Harding Park. Persons picking up the child will be asked to pay the late pick-up fee at the time of pick-up and sign a late pick-up slip. ______Minimum Days: I understand that HASEP classes generally do not meet on scheduled minimum days that do not fall on a Wednesday. Exceptions to this will be noted in the registration packet. ______Transfers: I understand that transfers from one course to another must be made at the El Cerrito Community Center five working days before the session begins. A $16 service fee is required. WAIVER, RELEASE AND INDEMNITY I give permission for my child, to participate in the above listed Harding After School Enrichment Program through the City of El Cerrito. In doing so, I hereby absolve the Harding PTA, its officers, volunteer HASEP committee members and instructors from all liability that may arise as the result from above-named child’s participation in the activities listed above. I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks inherent in my child’s participation in said program and I agree to assume the risk of accident or injury sustained in connection with the program.
