The City is preparing an update to its Housing Element. As part of this process, the City would like to invite you to a meeting to give you an opportunity to discuss the draft Element and communicate your priorities, desires and issues of concern related to housing within the City. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 15, 2011 and we are hoping you can attend. The Housing Element is one of the seven required elements (chapters) of the General Plan. The State Housing Element law, enacted in 1969, mandates that local governments adequately plan to meet the existing and projected housing needs of all segments of the population. The Element must be consistent with all parts of the General Plan and be closely related to the Land Use Element, which specifies land within the City that can be utilized for housing development. The law acknowledges that, in order for the market to adequately address housing needs and demand, local governments must adopt plans and regulatory systems which support housing development. As a result, the successful growth of a community rests largely upon the implementation of local general plans, and in particular, the Housing Element. A strong collaborative effort between the stakeholders in our community and decision-markers is essential in this process. Your role is to be an informational resource and provide observations and suggestions during the update process. You will also be notified about future meetings and public hearings. The stakeholder meeting will take place at City Hall.
