The City of El Cerrito Recreation Department Invites applications for the position of Junior Lifeguard / Swim Instructor Aide Recreation Services - Aquatics Department Part-time Temporary/Seasonal Positions/No benefits Compensation: $9.36 - $10.76 per hour, depending on qualifications, education and experience. Position Description: Under supervision of the Senior Guards, Aquatics Coordinator or Aquatics Supervisor, these positions provide assistance to aquatic staff and/or the patrons of the City of El Cerrito pool including swim lessons and recreational swim. These positions are seasonal and assigned up to 20 hours per week, which may include evenings and weekends. Candidates must be available to work from May 30th through August 23rd, 2015. There will be a required weekly staff meeting scheduled for the duration of the summer. Duties and Responsibilities: Typical job duties are: • Ensures patron safety during lap and recreation swim programs; • Acts as an instructional aide in the Learn To Swim program • Assists senior guards and supervisors when required • Assists the public with questions and inquires; • Assists with cleaning and maintenance of the aquatic facility. Conducts oneself in a professional manner Knowledge, skills and abilities: • Knowledge of philosophy, objectives and requirements in the implementation of municipal aquatics programs; • Knowledge of and application of safety standards and information related to aquatics; • Ability to function effectively under direct supervision and develop effective working relationships with fellow City Employees and the public; • Must communicate well verbally and in writing; • Ability to receive direction and follow oral and written instructions; • Ability to handle multiple tasks; • Professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity and demonstration of enthusiasm; • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time; ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals; vision to read written materials and computer screens, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and other physical parameters established by facility supervisors; and • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekdays and weekends. Experience and Education: Completion of a Junior Lifeguard course or current enrollment in the City Junior Lifeguard Camp program or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Current American Red Cross first aid and CPR certification required. Prior experience working with children and the public is desired. ---PAGE BREAK--- Additional Requirements: • Must be a minimum of 14 years old • Work permit is required • Must enroll in Swim Instructor Aide Training (9am – 12pm, 6/15/15 – 6/19/15) • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States. • Must be able to attend mandatory pre-season in-service training on Saturday, May 30, 2015.
